Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a special night at Al Barbour Field as the Eagles paid tribute to their five graduating seniors, including the senior captain
Amanda Otto, as they hosted Hope International in a game with Golden State Athletic Conference implications.
Biola should have senior night more often as the women's 1-0 win and the men's 2-1 win helped the Eagles to an undefeated senior night for the third year in a row.
The beginning of the match was a bit emotional as Otto came onto the field with Biola's starting 11 to take a "ceremonial" opening kick. The senior captain went down with a season-ending injury in Biola's win at Menlo earlier this year.
Motivated to get a win for their captain the Eagles absolutely ruled over the Royals from start to finish in this one. The Biola back line held this HIU team to just one shot the entire evening. The Royals came into play averaging three goals-per-game and over 20 shots-per-game.
Biola's back line was supported by the strong performances of
Cat Newberry,
Madyson Brown,
Kayla White and
Brianna Mikalson.
That staunch defensive effort made work pretty easy for senior goalkeeper
Marina Rodriguez who wrapped her hands around her third shutout of the season.
The defense's success was also assisted by a Biola attacking core that was phenomenal at maintaining possession and pushing the ball into the Eagles' attacking third all night long.
The Eagles got 18 shots off through the 90 minutes, but the biggest shot was the difference-maker, which came off the foot of the team's leading scorer,
Taylor Venegas, in the 53
rd minute.
The goal came after the Royals' keeper came all the way out to the edge of the box to cut off a run from
Samantha Verduzco. Verduzco attempted to push the ball past the keeper, but it was deflected and went in the direction of Venegas who managed to sweep it into the empty net.
That effort was Venegas's eighth tally of the season and was all the goal scoring that would take place in this one as there was just one more shot-on-goal throughout the remaining 37 minutes.
Biola honored Otto, Rodriguez,
Adeline Saldana,
Amanda Johnson and
Brittney Sayre in a pregame ceremony featuring the words from Head Coach
Erin Brunelle and escorts by the seniors' family and friends.
The Eagles improve to 11-1-3 (5-0-2 GSAC) with the victory while Hope International falls to 9-3-2 (3-3 GSAC) after the loss. Biola sits firmly in first place in the conference standings and finishes its regular season schedule with three road games, beginning with a match at Vanguard this Tuesday afternoon.
