Hunt, Eagles Outrun NCAA D1 Competition In Strong Saturday

Biola women and men show they can keep pace with the best in the NCAA at Bronco Invite.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. --- Head Coach Sean Henning has been preparing his squads for this meet, the 2015 Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara, all season long and the results definitely illustrate that preparedness.

Kellian Hunt is the biggest news of the day as the senior blew past everyone in a third-place overall finish in a 172-runner field dominated by NCAA Division I opponents. Hunt finished the 6k course in an astounding 19:57 to finish one minute ahead of any other non-NCAA Division I runner and just three seconds back from the winner out of Sacramento State. Just last week Hunt ran a 6k in 22:02 at the UCSD Triton Invitational, meaning a drop of more than two minutes in a week.

The 19:57 was of course fastest among the field of three non-NCAA Division I schools. The Eagles' team was also the fastest among that group of three schools, beating out No. 5 Carroll and CSU Monterey Bay.

"The women ran great today," said Henning. "They worked together really well. Kellian had a fantastic day and really mixed it up well with the leaders and tried to come out with a victory."

Henning had 10 runners in the field and six of them finished inside of the top-10 in the field of non-NCAA DI runners. Anika Gasner (4th – 21:17) and Lyndee Dawson (5th – 21:37) joined Gasner inside of the top-5 runners in this group.

Biola's total team time of 106:44 would've been tied with the University of San Diego for sixth place among the group of 18 NCAA Division I institutions.

Strong individual finishes from the rest of the women's team's top-7, which included Stephanie Croy (7th – 21:52), Kaili Waller (8th – 21:58), Emily Ransom (10th – 22:02) and Michelle Clark (11th – 22:07), aided this really low overall team time.

This event was the third time this season that the women's team has run a 6k. All seven of the Eagles' runners set new season-bests in this length.

Kevin Horchler had an equally impressive Saturday morning run. He finished 14th overall including the NCAA Division I schools and third overall without them by completing the men's 8k course in 24:17 to lead the Eagles' fifth place finish in the six-team non-NCAA Division I field.

"The team had a great day and really wanted to test themselves," said Henning. "They were in a fast race with a lot of strong teams and handled themselves well. This was the most complete team performance of the year so far."

The time in the low-24s is Horchler's new season-best as it beats his 25:22 from the season-opening run at UC Irvine by over one full minute.

Rounding out the men's top-5 was Ryan Thompson (17th – 25:37), Christian Perez (21st - 25:44), Timmy Wilson (24th – 25:55) and Shane Brinson (26th – 26:03).

The Eagles had six runners in the field, with Wes Noyes rounding out the effort with a 31st-place finish with a 26:26. Every Eagle set their new season-best on the men's side as Biola set a new season-low with a team time of 127:38.

Biola's men's contingent finished second among three NAIA schools in the mix by beating out Vanguard and finishing behind No. 4 Carroll.

The regular season competition schedule ends this upcoming Friday as the Eagles compete in the 2015 Titan Invitational at 4:45 p.m. on Oct. 23.
