Box Score SANTEE, Calif. --- Biola entered play on Saturday night with a perfect record in Golden State Athletic Conference play, and had yet to drop a set to a conference opponent. That game was ultimately a 3-2 loss, but Biola picked up right where it left off by getting a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-22) win over San Diego Christian on Tuesday night.
One of the main factors for Biola's return to success was a transformation from its duo of setters, no doubt thanks to careful coaching from assistant coach
Abbie Wright.
Ashton Arbuthnot and
Allison Spencer were able to more successfully set Biola's middle blocker tandem of
Amy Weststeyn and
Lauren Hoenecke on Tuesday night.
Weststeyn and Hoenecke ended the match with a combined 19 kills in just 32 total attacks, which is remarkable attack efficiency, especially considering that their attacking prowess in not a secret in the GSAC.
"Lauren continues to improve, and our setters are getting better each time out," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer.
Joclyn Kirton also had a return to form following a performance on Saturday that was not up to her very high standards. Kirton ended the evening with 12 kills and she hit .529, which is her second-highest output this season.
Biola cruised through the first set, getting production from its hitters, as well as benefitting from seven attacking errors by the Hawks.
The second set was much closer, as San Diego Christian cut down the errors and was much more effective at finding spots on the hardwood to put the ball in for kills. The Hawks 13 kills in the middle set trailed Biola's 16 by just three. That was the closest in number they would get in any set all night long.
Strong defense and passing from
Alex Brehaut ensured the Hawks could not match that kill output in the other two sets. Biola's libero picked up 11 digs in 18 opportunities tonight.
Both teams had efficient attacks in the third set, with San Diego Christian holding the advantage through a majority of the set. A few well-placed timeout calls by Seltzer helped Biola regain its confidence and form to get the job done. The Eagles overcame an 18-13 deficit to earn a 25-22 victory and secure the sweep.
Biola utilized a dominant six-point run to tie the game at 18 and get itself in position to walk away from the third set win. Weststeyn and
Alyssa Mason shone brightly during that stretch, with Weststeyn notching two service aces and Mason pounding two of her 10 kills in the match.
"I was really proud of them battling back from that hole in the third to take set three," said Seltzer.
Both teams had fantastic play at the net, as the Hawks combined for nine blocks and Biola got eight. The Eagles were aided by solo blocks from Mason, Kirton, Weststeyn, Hoenecke and
Crissy Cunningham.
Blocking is one of the many ways that San Diego Christian continues to show improvement and prove it will soon belong in the conversation of the top teams in the conference. Biola alum Barb (Rozendal) Wnek is the head coach who Seltzer notes is taking the program in a good direction.
"San Diego Christian is a much improved team," said Seltzer.
Biola improves to 13-4 (3-1 GSAC) with the win, while San Diego Christian drops to 5-6 (3-2 GSAC) following the loss. The Eagles continue conference play this Saturday evening with a road match against Arizona Christian. The Firestorm are currently 7-5 (2-3 GSAC) following a sweep of Hope International tonight.
