Saturday's Biola Blackout Named NAIA Match of the Week

No. 6 Biola hosts No. 3 Concordia this Saturday in a GSAC clash between two top NAIA teams.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola hosts its Golden State Athletic Conference counterpart, No. 3 Concordia (CA) on Saturday evening in Chase Gymnasium. The match was selected as the national match of the week by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. All Biola fans should wear as much black as possible to the contest, as this will be the first official "Biola Blackout" of the season.

Below is a match preview, provided by NAIA Manager of Communications & Sports Information Alan Grosbach:

• A pair of powerhouse programs out of the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) meet up Saturday in the NAIA Match of the Week when No. 3 Concordia (Calif.) travels to No. 6 Biola (Calif.).
• Concordia enters the weekend with a 0.5-game lead in the conference standings with a 3-0 record, including a 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-17) sweep of Hope International (Calif.) on Sept. 16. Biola and San Diego Christian (Calif.) are tied for second in the GSAC with 2-0 conference records.
• Biola holds a 38-19 advantage in the all-time series, including a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-23) sweep in the semifinals of the 2013 NAIA Volleyball National Championship. In the last 10 matches, Concordia owns a 7-3 record.
• Participating in the national championship is second nature to these clubs, as the two programs have combined for 22 appearances and a 90-33 record (.732), including six runner-up finishes and one national title. Concordia has made eight-straight trips to the national championship, while Biola is riding a streak of seven-straight. Concordia claimed the banner in 2012 with a 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 25-19) win over Columbia (Mo.).
• Much of Concordia's success has come in the last 10 years, as the Eagles are 302-56 (.844) – not including their 2014 wins – with three GSAC banners. Prior to 2004, the program recorded only 132 wins dating back to 1981.
• Concordia opened the season with a 10-match winning streak, before falling to then-No. 17 Rocky Mountain (Mont.), 3-2, on Sept. 5. The start marks the third-straight year Concordia has opened the year with at least 10-straight wins. Prior to the loss, the Eagles had swept nine of their first 10 opponents.
• Since 2011, Concordia is 53-6 against ranked opponents, including a 3-1 mark this season. The Eagles ranked wins this year have come against then-No. 13 Dordt (Iowa) (3-0) on August 21, then-No. 17 Rocky Mountain (3-1) on August 21 and then-No. 19 The Master's (Calif.) (3-1) on Sept. 9.
• Concordia showcases one of the NAIA's most efficient offensive attacks, ranking among the top 10 nationally in kills per set (1st; 15.13), assists per set (3rd; 13.75), hitting percentage (9th; .274), total assists (10th; 715) and total kills (10th; 787).
• Despite losing 11 seniors from its 2013 squad, the Eagles have not missed a beat, receiving strong performances throughout the season from returning All-American Jessica Israel and All-GSAC performer Jenee Henderson. Israel is tied for the team lead with a 3.5 kills per set average and is hitting .252. Henderson ranks third in the NAIA in assists per set with an 11.16 average. The senior Phoenix, Ariz., native has tallied at least 30 assists in 15-of-16 matches this season.
• Freshman outside hitter Rachel Flynn has also emerged as a key player for Concordia. She is tied for the team lead in kills (174) and ranks third on the team with 24 total blocks.
• Since joining the GSAC in 1994, Biola has never finished lower than fifth in the conference standings with league titles coming in 1996 and 1997.
• Biola, who finished as the national runner-up last season, entered 2014 with the 14th most program wins in NAIA history (930). The Eagles own 42 winning seasons since the program was established in 1969. The last time Biola finished below .500 was in 1990 (15-18).
• The Eagles enter the Match of the Week with a 4-2 record against ranked opponents – wins against then-No. 18 College of Idaho (3-0), then-No. 7 Midland (Neb.), then-No. 23 Eastern Oregon (3-1) and then-No. 17 Vanguard (Calif.) (3-0) – and a 6-1 mark at home.
• Head coach Aaron Seltzer is in his 13th season at Biola and entered the year with a program record – 19th on the NAIA's active coaching wins list – 316 wins during his tenure.
• All-American Amy Weststeyn is a force again this season for Biola. The senior middle blocker leads the NAIA with a .446 hitting percentage, while ranking seventh in total blocks (69) and 11th in total kills (201). Weststeyn owns 1,162 career kills, which ranks ninth on Biola's career kills list. She owns three 20-plus kill performances in 2014, including a season-high 22 in a five-set match against Westminster (Utah) on August 29.
• As a team, Biola ranks among the top 10 nationally in assists per game (1st; 13.8), kills per game (3rd; 14.81), hitting percentage (6th; .292), total assists (6th; 745), total kills (7th; 800) and total blocks (9th; 131).
