LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola begins the year with a bang, having three players earn Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Week nods in just the second week of awards.
Amy Weststeyn was named the volleyball player of the week, while
Stephen Tanquary and
Michael Kute earned the men's soccer offensive and defensive player of the week awards.
Â
These awards were presented based off of performances between Sept. 8-14.
Â
Weststeyn has now been the GSAC Player of the Week three times in her four seasons at Biola. She previously won this award once in each of the last two seasons.
This week, she led the Eagles to a 2-0 mark to start their GSAC schedule. She and the Eagles beat No. 17 Vanguard and Hope International in straight sets on Tuesday and Saturday evening.
Â
She ended the week as the only Eagle with double-digit kills in both of the matches, and she also ended the week with a hitting percentage of .442. She was involved in 11 of the Eagles' 16 blocks in their two wins and picked up three service aces without a single error.
Â
Tanquary and Kute also led Biola to two victories on the week. They were involved in two close matches; a 2-0 win over Antelope Valley and a 2-1 win over Our Lady of the Lake.
Â
Tanquary was named the conference's offensive player of the week after netting a goal in each contest. This is his first time winning this award at the conference level.
Â
His two goals on the week improved his season tally to a team-leading four on the season. He leads the team with eight points and has yet to produce an assist.
Â
His goals helped Biola get the close victories, but it was the defense of
Michael Kute and the rest of the back line that kept the Eagles in a position to get the wins.
Â
Kute wins his first career conference player of the week nod after playing 135 minutes in Biola's two wins and helping hold Antelope Valley to just four shots in the entire contest.
Â
Volleyball is back in action this Saturday with a home match against No. 3 Concordia, and men's soccer plays road matches today and Saturday.
