Box Score IRVINE, Calif. --- Despite a third and fourth set that belonged almost completely to No. 23 Eastern Oregon, No. 8 Biola pulled out its fifth victory of the season on a four-set (25-19, 25-22, 24-26, 28-26) squeaker.
Â
The Eagles took to first two sets fairly easily, before their game and confidence started to fall apart, resulting in a third-set loss and a narrow, almost unbearable victory in the fourth set.
Â
"We definitely did not deserve to win this match," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer.Â
Â
Biola got a lot of big kills in the first and second frames, but its attack was noticeably inconsistent. When the team had a chance to end a play with a kill, its attacks were just not finding the hardwood, and as a result it taking more volleys, digs and dives to secure their early points and early set victories.
Â
Amy Weststeyn and
Alyssa Mason stood out among the rest of the team, hitting .400-plus through the first two frames. Weststeyn remained the hot-hitter throughout, but Mason, along with the rest of the team took steps back in attack as the match progressed.
Â
Both teams hit sub-.250 for the match, resulting in a whole bunch of digs, 148 in total. Eastern Oregon's ability to keep the ball of their side of the floor made all the difference in its third-set victory. EOU's ability to pick the ball up resulted in Biola's lowest attacking percentage in a set this season (.079). The Eagles had 10 attack errors in the third frame, the only double-digit error set in the match.
Â
Eighteen kills in the fourth set proved Biola was back to their normal self and ready to put this match behind them. The Eagles had three more kills than EOU and equal attack errors, while also raking in two of their six service aces.
Â
Weststeyn led the Eagles with 20 kills, while Mason,
Britta Blaser and a hard-hitting
Joclyn Kirton also picked up double-digit daggers.
Alex Brehaut and
Jaci Schork shared the defensive duties, grabbing 23 an 19 digs, respectively.
Ashton Arbuthnot parlayed a strong first two sets into the assist lead, with 33.
Â
The Eagles have a quick turnaround before taking on Westminster College at 6 p.m.
