Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The day got off to a slow start, but eventually momentum built and Biola capped off day one of the 2014 Biola Volleyball/Red Lion-Anaheim Summer Slam with wins over No. 18 College of Idaho and Concordia (OR).
Â
The Eagles had a rough time getting anything started in the early contest against Concordia (OR), but were able to grit out a 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-16, 26-19) victory over the Cavaliers.
Â
"We struggled to get in any kind of rhythm in the first match," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "We took one step forward and two steps back."
Â
Part of the problem throughout the tightly contested first two sets was Biola's ability, or lack thereof, to get any sort of consistent hitting going on. The squad committed 18 attacking errors in the first two sets of the morning match, a stark contrast to the 11 total attacking errors in their late-night sweep of the 'Yotes.
Â
Crissy Cunningham was one of four Eagles to reach double-digit kills in the afternoon victory. She finished with 10 in what Seltzer noted as the best offensive performance of her career.
Â
The other big hitters were
Amy Weststeyn (14),
Alyssa Mason (13) and
Britta Blaser (11). The four big boppers were once again set by a nearly even assortment of assists between
Ashton Arbuthnot and
Allison Spencer.
Â
The third set is definitely where the early match began to swing in favor of the tournament hosts, as they upped their attack efficiency by nearly .300. It was their most convincing set win of the early match and set the team up well for a quick finish in the fourth.
Â
It was a completely different story in the nightcap, as the Eagles came out swinging from the outset and had the 'Yotes by the throat all match long.
Â
"Tonight, we played really good," said Seltzer. "We were in sync the whole time and never gave up more than three points in a row. We finally played a really good match."
Â
Biola hit no less than .433 in any of the three sets against the College of Idaho, and it compiled a whopping 48 kills in the process.
Â
Mason led the team with 12 smackdowns, giving her 25 on the day. She, Blaser and
Joclyn Kirton made life a nightmare for the 'Yotes back line with 26 combined kills and just four errors.
Â
The Eagles got a great performance out of
Jaci Schork, who shined in the service spot as well as on defense. She posted two service errors, four digs and two assists in her second match of the season.
Â
"Jaci played really well defensively tonight, but really everyone just played a great match," said Seltzer. "Everyone was swinging well, everyone was hitting well, and we even blocked really well. We needed everyone."
Â
The Eagles parlay their two wins today into a 2-1 overall record headed into two more matches tomorrow afternoon. They host No. 7 Midland at noon and Bellevue (RV) at 6 p.m.
