LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Eagles fought hard in every match, and made a late push, but could not overcome an improved Cal Lutheran team in a 6-3 loss on Friday afternoon.
Â
"They're doubles teams were solid, they were good at the net and could lob," said Head Coach
Dee Henry. "They are much improved from last season, their No. 1 from last year played No. 4 today."
Â
So with a mix of tough talent on the Regals, the Eagles had to push very hard to earn their three points on the day.
Â
The Eagles got two solid points at the No. 1 spots.
Madeline Heer got the call in No. 1 singles, and she answered strong with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Lindsay Murphy. Murphy was one of the talented returners to the Regals, winner of five individual and eight doubles matches a year ago. Heer dethroned her to earn her first individual win of the season. Heer had to adjust her game significantly after falling down 2-5 in the first set. She won the last five points and never again looked back.
Â
Maura Lopez continues to be on a roll to start the year, as she gained Biola's other point in individual competition. She played at No. 6 for the Eagles, and ran through her competition to a 6-3, 6-0 win. She has not dropped a set this season, grabbing two wins at the No. 6 position. She did get her first taste at losing today, as she and
Paige Erickson fell to 1-1 in doubles.
Â
"Maura's consistent and solid play was the key to her success," said Henry.
Â
Biola's only doubles win was a close 8-6 victory at the No. 1 spot. Heer and
Olivia Koelsch combined to down Cal Lutheran's top duo of Murphy and Rebecca Gold. It was their first win of the season together, as they fell 4-8 in last week's loss to Cal Tech.
Â
The Eagles get back in action tomorrow as they host Westmont for their first Golden State Athletic Conference action of the season.
