ORANGE, Calif. --- It was a rough, rough day on the courts for Biola as the team looked to follow up its hard-fought win over Cal Tech with more success against Chapman.
Â
They did not get the performance they were looking for as they were shutout by the Panthers in a 9-0 loss. The loss drops Head Coach David Goodman's team to 1-1 early in the season.
Â
It started off looking positive as Biola hung tough through the doubles competitions, forcing two of the matches to go to tiebreakers.
Â
The No. 1 doubles match was close to the end, as
Lucas Lee and
Tayven Townsend pushed the Panthers' top duo to an 8-6 contest. The No. 2 and No. 3 matches both were even closer, as the Eagles' athletes forced 9-7 matches.
Â
After the doubles competitions were through, it seemed as if the match could go either way, despite the 3-0 sweep by Chapman. However, individual matches were not as close as the Eagles hoped.
Â
Lee was the lone Eagle to force a three-set match, taking the second set over Champan's No. 1 Justin Thompson.
Isaiah Pekary nearly took a set at the No. 2 spot, but was unable to beat the Panther's No. 2 Troy Aiken in a second-set tiebreak.
Â
After today's contest, the Eagles have been outscored 29-7 all-time by the Panthers. The last two seasons alone see Biola fall to 17-1 in matches against Chapman.
Â
Biola returns to the court tomorrow morning as they host Westmont in their first Golden State Athletic Conference competition of the year.Â
