FULLERTON, Calif. --- After defeating Hope International on Tuesday afternoon, the Eagles now have more match wins than they had all of last season, three.
Â
Biola took down the Royals 6-3 on Hope International's home courts to improve the Eagles' overall record to 4-3 (2-2 GSAC). The third win makes it so that Biola already has at least as many or more wins than in three of its previous six seasons.
Â
Lucas Lee set the tone for the Eagles on the day, winning handily at No. 1 singles and teaming with
Luke Mountain to pick up one of Biola's two doubles wisn of the match.
Â
"Lucas played great. He has stepped up his game quite a bit in the last month," said Head Coach David Goodman. "It is always good to win at the top of the lineup. It takes the pressure off the rest of the guys."
Â
The two wins helped Lee get over a hump in the first year of his career at Biola, as they were his second wins of the season in singles and doubles.
Â
Singles play was where Biola earned its advantage, as the team won four of the six matchups. Lee set the tone with his two-set (6-1, 6-2) win up top, and he was followed with wins by
Luke Mountain,
Brandon Chang and
Rodric Pence.
Â
Isaiah Pekary suffered a loss in the singles competition, but played some strong tennis with
Tayven Townsend in doubles play to get a 9-7 win at the No. 1 spot.
Â
Townsend played some gutsy tennis at the No. 4 singles spot, but he eventually lost out to Thiago Brito in a third set loss.
Â
"No. 1 doubles played well as Isaiah and Tayven are beginning to find their rhythm as a team," said Goodman.
Â
It was a long match, as is par for the course for Eagles and Royals matches, it came in at three hours and 45 minutes of play.
Â
Biola's win continued Hope International's winless season as the Royals drop to 0-6 (0-5 GSAC).
Â
Biola hits the courts next Saturday at No. 12 Concordia.Â
