LA MIRADA, Calif. --- BYU-Hawai'I traveled a long way to face Biola early on Saturday morning, and they made the trip worthwhile by defeating the Eagles, 9-0.
Â
The No. 2 team in the NCAA Division II women's tennis rankings put on a clinic at the Biola Tennis Center, allowing just eight total points to the Eagles across all nine matches.
Â
Susan Carmichael was the only Eagle to pick up a point in each set of her match, as she fell to Alexandra Ulbrichtov (6-1, 6-1) at No. 3 singles.
Â
She combined with
Kathryn Ashford at No. 1 doubles, again experiencing a tough loss, but at least picking up one point against the talented Seasiders duo.
Â
"The opponents were polite, and they made very good choices," said Head Coach
Dee Henry. "The majority of our errors today were forced errors. This shows that our players were keeping themselves in the points and played defense when the play called for defense."
Â
BYUH proved its immense talent at the No. 1 singles spot, where Marietta Tuinetoa swept Ashford in a two-set match (6-0, 6-0). Tuinetoa becomes the first opponent this year to hold Ashford without a point in singles. This marks just the third time in Ashford's very successful two years at Biola that she has been rendered without a tally.
Â
It is a good way for her, and the rest of the Eagles' lineup, to learn from some of the top talent on the collegiate scene.
Â
"They were solid at every position," said Henry. "We picked up valuable experience against the NCAA DII No. 2 team."
Â
Biola falls to 0-6 after the loss, and BYU-Hawai'i improved to 8-0 overall with the win over Biola and a defeat of Hope International later in the day on Saturday.
Â
The Eagles get back on the court on Tuesday with a road contest at Hope International (1-6, 0-4 GSAC).
