Box Score IRVINE, Calif. --- One of the strangest basketball seasons in Biola's history continued with an upset road loss to Concordia on Saturday evening, dropping Biola back down to an even .500 record in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
Â
Biola got off to a torrid start at CU Arena, scoring the first nine points of the contest, and building a 12-point lead within the first five minutes of play.
Â
It seemed like the Eagles were well on their way to a fourth straight win, and sixth in the last seven, when
Elizabeth Munger hit the free throw to give Biola its 16-4 advantage.
Â
After some foul trouble caught up with some key players, the Eagles lead began to shrink away as Concordia began to ride the wave of emotion propelled by their home crowd on senior night.
Â
A 23-17 Biola lead quickly turned into a 47-33 advantage for Concordia after the home team made eight of ten shots, including seven straight to end the half.
CUI also nailed 16-22 free throws in the first half, a statistic that would be key as the game rolled on and the two teams combined for 74 free throw attempts on the evening.
Â
Turnovers made all the difference during Concordia's run to take its convincing lead. Biola coughed the ball up 14 times in the first half alone, and 22 times in the game. The 14 turnovers that the Eagles surrendered in the first half was more than they have given up in four full games this season.
Â
Concordia managed to control the ball more effectively, only surrendering 12 turnovers on the night. However, both teams managed 23 points off of turnovers, neutralizing the difference.
Â
Biola came out of the half with a new purpose, to come back after a dreadful finish to the first frame, and the team did pretty well.
Â
The Eagles shot 45 percent from the floor in the second period, and rode its 18 free throw conversions to a 48-42 advantage in the half. It was not enough, as the Eagles of Irvine converted 11 of their 12 free throw opportunities in the half to continually close the door on Biola down the stretch run.
Â
It was fitting that a senior would lead the scoring on Concordia's senior night. Ashley Engeln dropped 19 on Biola, and she also added seven rebounds and three assists and steals in a complete performance.
Â
It was
Adijat Adams who was dominant on the Biola side of the ball, putting up 30 points and 14 rebounds to notch her 19
th double-double on the year.
Â
Aside from the plethora of turnovers, it was shooting that was the thorn in Biola's side in the loss. The Eagles shot nearly 10 percent worse than CUI, and was 20 percent worse from three-point land.
Â
The loss did not hurt Biola too much, as its spot as the No. 5 seed in the conference is locked up. The only damage it did was potentially keep the team from getting ranked in the upcoming coach's poll. Biola could still have a chance to sneak into the rankings, having won five of their last seven games and defeated the No. 7 and No. 15 teams in the country.
Â
The Eagles drop to 11-17 (6-6 GSAC) and CUI improves to 11-13 (4-8 GSAC).
Â
Biola's senior night is scheduled for Tuesday night, when the Eagles host Arizona Christian (5-21, 0-12 GSAC).
