HIGHLIGHTS & INTERVIEWS
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Annie Park and
Aubree Mittel poured on the points as Biola took full advantage of the three-point line to fire past Pomona-Pitzer, 77-62.
Â
Picking up where she left off Saturday against William Jessup, Mittel made the most of her openings, draining five-of-nine three-point field goals to give her eight in the last two games. She slipped around screens, cut to the corners on drive and kicks and trailed to just the right spots in transition to find all the openings she needed.
Â
Finding her for many of those buckets,
Annie Park bounced back after an off night in Rocklin, dialing up eight assists from set plays, in transition and creating out of isolations or screen-and-roll. She also continues to show more of her scoring prowess. Her 19 points tonight is a new career-high at Biola, and puts her as one of only three Eagles this season to average double-digit scoring, with
Chelsea Hill and Mittel.
Â
The Eagles needed strong performances from Park and Mittel, as their normally stout defense took some lumps in this one. Pomona-Pitzer operates almost exclusively inside the arc, attempting only six three-pointers in this game, and they found success where many teams haven't in attacking Biola's forwards. The Sagehens shot 44 percent from the field; Biola is allowing 35.7 percent to opponents on average this season. However, the Eagles made the most of Pomona-Pitzer's three-point reluctance, outscoring them by a dozen from beyond the arc and making this the first game Biola has won with a lower field-goal percentage then their opponent.
Â
The Eagles forwards have definitely had better games, but their continued growth in rebounding showed here as well. They held the Sagehens to just six offensive rebounds and grabbed 13 of their own.
Â
"Our post players are working hard on the offensive boards, as are our guards in crashing and getting points," said Head Coach
Dr. Bethany Miller. "Tonight, we knew that they were a strong rebounding team, especially [Jenn Okonkwo]. We knew we had to win the rebounding battle tonight and that would make a big difference."
Â
In addition to the strong work rebounding, Hill put a cheer into the crowd and her teammates as she logged her 1,000th career point on a free throw with three minutes left in the first half. She is by far the highest active scorer with no other Eagle topping 500 career points. Hill is averaging 9.7 points per game during her four-year career with Biola.
Â
The Eagles return to Chase Gymnasium on Saturday when they resume Golden State Athletic Conference play against Arizona Christian. The game will be the team's last before a two-week Christmas vacation.
