SEMIFINAL PREVIEW: Biola vs. Park

The marquee matchup of the semifinals involves Biola, as it faces No. 2 Park.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa --- There are just four teams left in this National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Volleyball National Championship Tournament, and it is a whole new level of play inside the Tyson Events Center.

No. 4 Biola is involved in the day's marquee matchup as it draws the highest remaining seed in the tournament, No. 2 Park, in a 9 a.m. semifinal matchup. The match runs concurrently with the other semifinal featuring No. 5 Texas-Brownsville and No. 9 Viterbo (Wisc.).

"Park is really, really good," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "They are big, physical, and it is going to be a totally different game than we've seen to this point. It reminds me a lot of the Brownsville team we met in the finals last year."

The Pirates are the only remaining unbeaten team at any level of collegiate volleyball with a 38-0 overall record. They advanced to the first national semifinal appearance in their program's history with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-11, 25-22) win over No. 3 Concordia last night.

Biola advances to its third-straight NAIA semifinal, following a 3-1 (26-24, 20-25, 25-13, 25-20) win over No. 15 Eastern Oregon in Friday night's quarterfinal round. Biola has three semifinal wins in its program history.

The Eagles have an experience advantage and they also have the advantage of coming out of the best pool in the tournament. The second-place finisher in Biola's pool D was Viterbo, who is also in the NAIA semifinals.

Biola and Park have never met before, as the Pirates are very new to the top level of NAIA women's volleyball competition, competing in just their second-ever NAIA National Championship Tournament.

Their best player, Wendy Romero, is crucial to the Pirates rapid, and somewhat unexpected rise to the top.

Romero is a 6-foot outside hitter from San Carlos, Venezuela who is making waves against any NAIA competition she faces. She is an all-conference player, conference player of the year and was recently named the AVCA NAIA Midwest Region Player of the Year.

She is a complete player who is near the tops in the country in kills, aces and hitting percentage and adds a bevy of digs to round out her stat line. Romero is the kind of player that finds her name in all the discussions for NAIA Player of the Year. She is a game-changer from the outside, which is so rare and something Biola has yet to face this season.

The good news is, the Eagles have a player of their own that can go head-to-head with Romero, Amy Weststeyn. Weststeyn has accumulated many of those same awards, and has stats just as, if not more, impressive. There is one key difference between the two. Weststeyn is a senior team captain, emotional leader, and she has three years of experience at the national tournament, including two previous national semifinal trips.

The action begins inside Tyson Events Center at 11:00 a.m. local time. Catch all of the information related to the match, broadcast and more here.
