HIGHLIGHTS & INTERVIEWS
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Eagles waited until there was just five and a half minutes on the clock, but they finally put everything together, reeling off a 15-0 run to close out Arizona Christian, 56-45.
Â
"Our girls really dug in down the stretch for that 15-0 run," said Head Coach
Dr. Bethany Miller. "It just shows the work that we have cut out for us. Every game is a tough game in GSAC [Golden State Athletic Conference], and we need to continue to get better and better."
Â
Elizabeth Munger and
Chelsea Hill found their touch down the stretch as the two combined for nine of Biola's final 15 points. Munger and Hill each had massive games after a handful of lackluster games prior to this one. Munger finished with 24 points, the most points any Eagle has scored in a game this season, and nine rebounds. She also had perhaps the biggest play of the game, finishing through a foul and sinking the free throw to push the Eagles up five with just 2:30 remaining. Hill bounced out of her mini-slump by scoring over, around and through defenders for her 19 points. She also connected for three big assists and swatted two Firestorm shots. Â
Â
"Liz [Munger] and Chelsea [Hill] really came out especially in the second half, and even from the tip-off, knowing what we wanted to do and their role," said Miller. "After two games where they really didn't do their best, they really came out in practice and tonight and proved they wanted to do better."Â
Â
The win moves the Eagles to 9-3 on the season, keeps their GSAC record spotless and makes Biola the first to notch three conference wins.
Â
However, in the first 30 minutes of this one, the Eagles did not look like a team atop the GSAC standings. They shot a paltry 28.1 percent in the first half, and they hit only one of eight three-pointers in the entire game. Also, Miller's bench did not score a single point for the first time all season.
Â
"We made some halftime adjustments on angles and what we needed to do to get our post players the looks that we need them to have," said Miller. "Really, Liz and Chelsea just stepped up and started to execute. There wasn't really anything special except being better and doing the fundamental things we needed to do."
Â
The Eagles will have plenty of time to polish those fundamentals, as they have 16 days off for Christmas between games. They return to action Dec. 29 in a rematch against Bethesda at Chase Gymnasium.
