HIGHLIGHTS & INTERVIEWS
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Last season, the Eagles' first win came on Dec. 10. That team started 0-10 in what was for the most part a forgettable season. This year, Biola is 5-1, marking its best start since the 2008-09 team that finished 20-12 and made it to the second round of the NAIA National Championship Tournament.
The Eagles were the far better team in Wednesday night's game. The offense rolled. The defense stopped everyone and everything La Sierra threw at it, and Biola put the game out of reach within minutes of the opening tip. Seven minutes into the contest, La Sierra's head coach, Robert Castillo, was forced to use his second timeout of the contest after
Taylor Casey's layup put the Eagles up 18-2.
Needless to say, the timeout didn't help.
The Eagles would finish the half up by 32 points, shooting 52.9 percent from the field to La Sierra's 20.8 percent. Biola's lockdown defense allowed just 15 points to the Golden Eagles in the first 20 minutes, making it just 26 points allowed to opponents over its previous 40 minutes on the court, dating back to last game's win. The second half got a little better for the Golden Eagles as Biola's defense and starters started to relax, but the Eagles still finished with comfortable margins in total score and every statistical measure.
"We came out very disciplined. Our starting group ran our game plan very well and executed," said Head Coach
Dr. Bethany Miller. "We had a strong first half and a lot of good minutes from a lot of our bench."
Biola's set of forwards were once again dominant. The foursome of
Chelsea Hill,
Christiana Layne,
Taylor Casey and
Elizabeth Munger combined for 45 points on just 29 field goal attempts and 24 total rebounds. For the season, the four combined are averaging an impressive 32.6 points per game and 20.3 total rebounds per game.
Miller had to be encouraged that the Eagles shined in what had been a weakness to this point in the season, turnover margin. Biola committed just eight total turnovers after coughing it up 28 times in their last game against UC Merced. Lead guards
Annie Park and
DeMoria White kept it safe, turning it over just two times combined. However, the Eagles ran the ball through their forwards through much of this game, tearing apart La Sierra on high post to low post passes. Working out of the high post,
Chelsea Hill led the game assists with six and turned it over just once.
The Eagles' other early-season weakness looked to be a strength in the first half when the Eagles grabbed 18 of the 35 missed shots in the first half, limiting the Golden Eagles to just four offensive rebounds. Munger was excellent in this regard, as the senior forward pulled down seven herself and boxed out effectively throughout to help Biola get many more. However, Biola seemed to relax on the glass in the second half and La Sierra was able to pick up 10 offensive rebounds and 19 total.
"In the second half, we were less disciplined defensively," said Miller. "We continue to need work in making sure we can put two halves together and come out strong all the time."
The Eagles stay at home for their next game when they host No. 4 Westminster College (4-0) on Saturday afternoon.
