Cougars Claw Back Late In Second Half

Biola held the lead near the middle of the second half, but couldn't seal the deal against CSUSM

Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif. --- Both the Eagles and CSU San Marcos struggled shooting the ball throughout, but the Cougars hit key free throws down the stretch to end Biola's winning streak at five games, serving up a 58-53 defeat.

The two squads played fairly even throughout, but CSUSM's slightly better shooting percentage proved key to their victory. Its impact was felt when the Cougars were able to score double Biola's amount of points off turnovers despite forcing six fewer takeaways.

Chelsea Hill and Adijat Adams led Biola with 16 points each, but their contributions were not enough to stop the second half swing in favor of CSUSM.

Both teams were dreadful in the first few minutes, going nearly four minutes until the Cougars were able to get the first two points on the board off a Heather Thompson jumper. Thompson ended with 13 points and 12 rebounds, one of two double-doubles in the game; Adams was the other.

Once the two teams worked out some of the kinks the first half was a very enjoyable back-and-forth affair. While CSUSM led through most of the half, Biola was able to keep it within three points of fewer for almost all of the period. They were aided by the Cougars' tendency to put them on the charity stripe.

Biola was 7-7 from the line in the first half, helping them keep to just a one-point deficit at the break.

The Eagles actually took the lead coming straight out of the gate in the second half, and they were able to maintain it for the first seven minutes of the period. An 11-4 run by CSU San Marcos gave them the four-point advantage with just 12 minutes left to play.

While Biola initially fought to get the game back to a tie, the Cougars eventually began to pull away and built their lead to a game-high six points just before the end of the game.

Adams made a three-point play with just seven seconds left on the clock and it looked like the Eagles were back in it, needing a steal on the inbounds to get a chance to tie it up.

Lindsay Uyematsu received the inbound pass cleanly and nailed her two free throws, for her only two points of the night, and that was it for Biola as they suffered their 11th loss on the season.

The Eagles move to 5-11 while the Cougars improve to 8-12.

Biola resumes play on Tuesday with their conference-opener against No. 13 Westmont.
