Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a surprise performance by
Desiree Robinson and very efficient team play that helped Biola take its fifth straight victory by defeating Chapman 65-55 on Tuesday night.
Â
The Eagles entered the game with nothing to lose and everything to gain as a 4-10 team with just two games to play before their real season began.
Â
They came out of the gates flying, building a 6-0 lead over the first three minutes before the Panthers were able to get on the board. Four of those early points were scored by Robinson, who was the Eagles' surprise scoring leader with 19 points on the night.
Â
"Tonight was a great night. The Panthers are a very well-coached program," said Head Coach
Dr. Bethany Miller. "Our girls really executed well. We had big games from Desiree and Adijat and Chelsea really stepped up in the post spot."
Â
The Eagles were more selective with their shot selection and it paid off, as they shot above 45 percent. Whenever they did miss a shot they were dominant on the offensive boards, getting 18 offensive rebounds.
Adijat Adams had eight offensive and eight defensive boards.
Â
Biola battled through the Panthers' consistent press defense to set up offensive opportunities for Robinson on the outside and Adams and
Chelsea Hill on the inside. The two forwards combined for 28 points on the night.
Â
After building their six-point lead early on the Eagles maintained their hold on the advantage for most of the night. Chapman made a comeback attempt, especially late in the first half, but only managed a two-point lead before it was taken away again.
Â
Biola scored 22 second chance points and 21 points off of turnovers, making the clear 10 point difference in the scoring. Despite the press put on the Eagles' offense all night long they only turned the ball over 12 times.
Â
"Our ball control statistics are improving," said Miller.
Â
The game came down to fouls and free throws in the final minutes, and the Eagles nailed down seven of 10 to extend their lead and get their second straight double-digit win.
Â
The Eagles improved their record to 5-10 after their 0-10 start, and the Panthers fell to 9-4 on the year.
Â
Biola wraps up preseason play with a game at CSU San Marcos on Thursday.Â
