Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Eagles got their wings clipped on Tuesday night as they opened Golden State Athletic Conference play with an uninspired loss to Westmont.
The Warriors came out and made shots when Biola simply did not, and it led to a 72-56 win for WC. The win gives Westmont a 10-4 overall record and drops BU to 5-12. It is the Eagles' second straight loss after five straight wins.
Â
It was an inability to hang onto the ball early in the first half that did in Biola as it allowed WC to build a very large early lead.
Â
Kelsie Sampson and Esther Lee were two key cogs in the Westmont offensive attack, scoring 16 of the team's first 18 points as they built a very quick nine-point advantage.
Â
The Warriors continued their physical play and kept Biola from getting hot throughout the first half, leading to a 40-20 lead after the first 20 minutes.
Â
It was a poor display of shooting by the Eagles in the first half, especially outside the arc, where they went 0-7.
Â
In contrast, the Warriors shot exactly 50 percent from the floor, nailing 16 of their 32 attempts. Both teams were not making friends with the officials, getting called for a combined 14 fouls in the half and 33 in the game.
Â
The Warriors stormed out of the gate in the second frame too, putting up eight straight points in the first three minutes and effectively putting the nail in the coffin by building a 48-20 lead.
Â
Adijat Adams and
Kiara Clark contributed some points down the stretch, keying an 11-point run in the middle of the frame, but it was still not enough to get Biola back in the game.
Â
Adams, the reigning GSAC player of the week, reeled in another double-double, totaling 12 points and 10 rebounds in the contest. Clark had her sixth double-digit output of the season with her 11-points.
Â
Westmont held the lead from start to finish to start their conference season off on the right foot. Biola has a chance to get back on track this weekend when they take on No. 1 Vanguard on the road.
