Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was all about quality AND quantity on the pitch on Thursday night as Biola created many quality offensive chances, while scoring a large quantity of goals in a 4-0 win over Corban.
Â
The Eagles entered the game looking to recuperate from their recent 0-2 road trip to Montana. The game against Corban marked BU's first home game in over two weeks.
Â
The team looked happy to be home right away, scoring the first goal of the game just 27 minutes in when a cross from
Chrissy King set up
Miranda Starbeck to tap it in from six yards out for her first score of the year.
Â
"The girls came out really well tonight, they were really determined," said Head Coach
Todd Elkins. "I think some of the frustration from some of the results from this past road trip helped us. We had some good training sessions to work on what we didn't do so well at on the road, and I think they put those things into the game really well."
Â
Corban looked out of sync right from the opening kick, as BU dominated possession and was able to advance the ball into their offensive third of the field to create many opportunities leading up to the first goal.
Â
The Eagles got 11 shots taken within the first 26 minutes, before Starbeck converted their 12
th shot for the score.
Â
Elkins noted that all of the shots were taken to create quality opportunities rather than just for the sake of shooting. This was a contrast from the two previous games, both in which Biola led in shots but ultimately lost the game.
Â
Just over 10 minutes elapsed until BU got its next chance to increase their lead. In the 37
th minute the Eagles were awarded a corner kick to the right side of the goal.
Adeline Saldana kicked the ball into the box looking to connect with any of the BU forwards. She found
Amanda Otto who clubbed the ball toward the low left corner where a Corban defender was waiting. The defender got a foot on the ball, but could not clear it and it went in for the score, Otto's team-leading second goal of the season.
Â
"You need to create a lot of chances in order to get a goal," said Elkins. "As long as you create chances you can score. Tonight we created a lot of chances."
Â
The result of all those chances was a three-goal half, which is nearly unheard of, especially with the defensive brand of soccer that BU usually employs.
Â
The third goal of the half was scored by veteran forward
Chrissy King who dribbled a pass from
McKenna Marmelstein around a defender in the box and booted in the goal from 20 yards out. She too now has two goals on the year.
Â
Things did not get much better for the Warriors after halftime as Biola continued to press and look to extend their already insurmountable lead.
Â
The Eagles started the second half by teaming up a lot of their younger, inexperienced players in order to create a comfort level between the new teammates. All three of the starting forwards in the second half were freshmen.
Â
"I think they (new players) did well," said Elkins. "We are needing our young players to get some time and experience in and get used to our team. Every chance we get we will maximize that time together. Some mistakes happen because players just don't know each other, but in time they will get used to each other and those will get eliminated."
Â
Just 10 minutes in to the second half one of those young forwards,
Jessie Burns, found her comfort zone with junior
Amanda Lillicrop. Lillicrop swept the ball into the box from the right side and Burns was there to receive it and boot it in for her first goal as an Eagle.
Â
From that point forward BU held its defensive line despite a slight shift of possession in favor of Corban, and
Briana Williams ended with four saves and a shutout.
Â
The Eagles outshot Corban 28-4 on the night and earned five corner kicks as opposed to the Warriors one.
Â
It is a short day of rest for BU and then they are back on the Al Barbour Field Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. matchup with Oklahoma Wesleyan.
