Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola played host to it's closest Golden State Athletic Conference rival on Saturday when the unranked Hope International Royals visited a packed Chase Gymnasium.
Â
The crowd of nearly 400 fans went wild to help BU secure its 12
th consecutive win to open the season as they swept the Royals in straight sets (25-12, 25-11, 25-21) to win their third GSAC game.
Â
"It is great to keep this streak rolling," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "Hope International played tough tonight, especially in that last set, but it feels good to get off to this quick start in conference."
Â
Alyssa Mason and
Joclyn Kirton led the way for the Eagles, picking up a combined 17 kills, while Kirton hit the ball at an .875 clip.
Â
Johanna Wade managed to pick up double-digit kills for the Royals, but their entire squad hit a -.090 overall, compared to Biola's .317.
Â
The first two sets were controlled completely by the Eagles as they raced through to create a quick 2-0 advantage. They were aided by some really solid sideout percentages and a lack of ability to win the ball back on HIU's side.
Â
"The team did really well at getting the ball back tonight," said Seltzer. "Even when we dropped a point, they were able to go right back out there and win it back."
Â
Set three was the most challenging of the sweep, but it demonstrated the Eagles ability to overcome some adversity and win when they are expected to win.
Â
Hope got off to a screaming start in the final set, maintaining a solid lead through a majority of the set, leading by five points or more four different times. Their biggest late lead was when they found themselves up 17-12. A 4-0 run off of some
Tara Rallis serves helped the Eagles right the ship and find themselves right back in it at 17-16.
Â
After three quick points by the Royals
Crissy Cunningham got the serve after an HIU attack error. Two aces from Cunningham and five attack errors helped BU secure its 12
th win and put away the set 25-21.
Â
The Eagles have six days off until they host Arizona Christian (1-11, 0-3 GSAC) on Friday.Â
