Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- On Saturday night the Biola Eagles proved every bit why they are the No. 3 squad in the nation. They took on No. 22 The Master's in a game that was supposed to be one of the best games on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' slate this week.
Â
The Eagles asserted their dominance on the court keeping The Master's at bay, defeating the Mustangs 3-1 (25-19, 25-15, 19-25, 25-10). BU led almost every set from beginning to end, with the exception of the third set, which they lost after TMC was able to start a come from behind rally.
Â
After the third, the Eagles came out looking like an entirely new, regrouped, team and they closed the door on the Mustangs with a 15 point win in the fourth.
Â
The win is Biola's 10
th straight to open the season and Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer's 299
th career victory.
Â
"It was a great night for us," said Seltzer. "It was tough to drop that third set, but the team did a great job of refocusing and coming back to own it in the fourth."
It was a wide cast of characters that led the charge for BU on Saturday, as three of their hitters racked up double-digit kills.
Alyssa Mason led the way with 14, hitting at a .270 clip.
Joclyn Kirton and
Amy Weststeyn joined in with 10 kills a piece.
Â
"Alyssa (Mason) did a fantastic job tonight," said Seltzer. "She got in a lot of hits and was able to do some damage for us from the left side."
Â
Tara Rallis suited up as libero for the Eagles and recorded 15 digs, but again the defensive opportunities were spread around, as
Alex Brehaut was able to tack on 13 digs as a defensive specialist.
Â
The first set was played the tightest, as both sides went back and forth trading the lead and there were eight different times the score was tied.
Â
A few three-point runs and one four-point run late in the set gave BU the edge and got them off on the right foot.
Â
The next set was all Biola all the way, as the lead only changed hands twice. The Eagles managed to rake in 13 kills in the set and hit .278 as a team.
Â
Set three was a peculiar one as BU got off to a seemingly insurmountable 11-3 lead and seemed poised to clinch a sweep over their Golden State Athletic Conference counterpart.
Â
A kill by Sam Daugherty of The Master's made it 11-4, then a service error from the Eagles set up 11-5 and the Mustangs got on a roll. They staged a five-point run and then several three-point runs followed by the killer seven-point run that ended the set and gave Mustangs head coach Robert Blanken his first ever set win over a Biola squad. Three of the Mustangs final seven points came off of attack errors by the Eagles, who hit just .051 in the set.
Â
"It was a really disappointing set," said Seltzer. "But you have to give them credit, they battled and made some big plays to close out the set."
Â
The Eagles played their best set of the night in the deciding fouth set, as they led from start to finish and wrapped up their 10
th win of the year.
Â
The win makes Biola 10-0 (1-0 GSAC) and drops The Master's to 10-3 (0-1 GSAC), with the win the Eagles hold on to first place in the GSAC as they are one win ahead of No. 1 Concordia.
Â
Biola takes the court at Vanguard on Tuesday and then returns home Sept. 28 against Hope International.
