Box Score COSTA MESA, Calif. --- When both of a team's active setters are included in the program's all-time assist leaders, life can be very good for a volleyball team.
Â
No. 4 Biola is currently enjoying the benefits that come from the ability to run two very talented setters onto the court. These setters paved the way for Biola to improve to 9-0 on the year after picking up two wins at the Vanguard University Tournament on Friday.
Â
The Eagles swept both matches while beating La Sierra and CSU San Marcos behind the strength of their top-notch passing game.
Â
"We have two really good setters, and that makes things a lot easier, it's a luxury," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer.
Â
Gracee Gallarda is BU's primary setter, and already had 240 assists in just seven games played entering play on Friday.
Nicolette Douglas is returning to the Eagles' rotation this season after missing all of last year with an injury, and she had yet to play an entire match this year.
Â
Gallarda ranks sixth among Biola's all-time assist leaders (2,815), and Douglas finds her place at 13
th (656). The duo each saw some significant time on the court today.
Â
The Eagles began the day in a clash with the Golden Eagles of La Sierra. They really overpowered La Sierra offensively and ran through the match, sweeping the Golden Eagles in just an hour and 20 minutes.
Â
"It is sometimes tough to get going again after a long layoff, and we have had a long break," said Seltzer. "But we just continued to get stronger and stronger as the match went on."
Â
This match marked the first time this season that Douglas has put in an entire game at the setter spot. Gallarda spent the three sets on the bench as Douglas worked the offense and earned 32 assists while the Eagles racked in 44 kills.
Â
"It is hard to sit out a whole year and then jump back in," said Seltzer. "Nicolette did a great job, she looked really good."
Â
She is going to need to be good, as she grooms to take over as the primary setter next season, after Gallarda graduates.
Â
Alyssa Mason and
Chelsee Arnitz led the other half of the offensive attack for BU, each picking up 11 kills and hitting around .300, while
Tara Rallis led the defense with 12 digs.
Â
After a five hour layoff, the Eagles got back in action in their nightcap, squaring off against CSU San Marcos, a very talented, yet unranked, opponent.
Â
"They were definitely the toughest squad we have faced all year," said Seltzer. "They may not be in the top 25, but they definitely should be."
Â
The first set was a bit of a shocker for BU, as the Cougars took the Eagles all the way into extra points before eventually falling 26-24.
Â
Biola jumped to a quick lead in the first set, leading 6-2, but the Cougars clawed their way back and used a strong defensive approach to keep the set within two points from that point forward.
Â
"Defensively they were really strong, they were digging everything," said Seltzer.
Â
That was the case for the first set, but after early concerns BU righted the ship and finished out CSUSM, winning the last two sets 25-20 and 25-17.
Â
Gallarda was the setter for match two, and she increased her career assist mark by 33, putting her exactly 301 assists out of Biola's top 5.
Â
Amy Weststeyn dominated above the net against CSU San Marcos, picking up 13 kills in just 21 attacks, while registering just one error.
Â
Her hot hitting helped the Eagles get their ninth straight win while dropping the Cougars to 13-6 on the year.
Â
Biola will take the rest of the weekend off, and get back in action next Saturday as they begin conference play with a home match against No. 22 The Master's.Â
