Madrid, Luster Help Keep Biola Alive in GSAC/CalPac Tournament

CeCe Luster
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 IRVINE, Calif. --- CeCe Luster tossed a three-hit shutout in her first start in two months while Bria Madrid blasted a three-run home run to give Biola a 3-0 victory in a loser-out game of the 2013 GSAC/CalPac Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon.

The Eagles are one of three teams remaining in the tournament, improving to 24-27 with the victory. The win came after Biola lost 5-0 to Simpson in the first game of the day.

The loser-out game was an impressive pitchers' duel between Luster and William Jessup's Andrea Lutz.

Biola didn't get its first hit in the contest until the sixth inning as Heather Hall singled up the middle with one out. Luster then helped out her own cause with a single through the right-side. Bria Madrid then kept up her hot hitting in the tournament with a three-run home run to left-center to break the scoreless tie.

Luster pitched well in her first start since suffering an injury back on Feb. 26. She allowed just three hits over a seven-inning stretch and struck out two including the final batter of the game.

The victory kept Biola alive in the tournament where the Eagles have a rematch against Simpson University on Saturday at 11:45 am. The winner advances to the championship game to face No. 1 seed Concordia while the loser is eliminated.

Simpson University got the better of Biola in the first game of the day--a winner's bracket game earlier in the day. The Red Hawks got off to a solid start, scoring three times in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead.

Biola added a run in the third and another in the sixth. Meanwhile, Biola had trouble getting much going offensively, managing just four hits in the game. The Eagles had a solid chance in the seventh as Brooke Madrid opened the inning with a double. After a ground out, pinch-hitter Brianna Morales drew a walk, but a ground out and pop out ended the game.
