Weststeyn Named Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American

Amy Weststeyn earned her first nod as an Academic All-American, after winning Academic All-District twice.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Amy Weststeyn continues to add to her extensive resume compiled in her three seasons as a Biola Eagle. The junior middle blocker earned her first career Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American nod Monday as she was named to the College Division second team.

She becomes the fifth Biola athlete in 2013-14 to earn the prestigious honor for balancing athletic performance with academic achievement.

Weststeyn had a monster year on the court, leading Biola to its national runner-up finish at last week's National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Volleyball National Championship, but she kept on top of her academics as well, earning a 3.95 cumulative grade point average.

The senior journalism major was named Academic All-District first team last season and again earlier this season, but this is the first time she has won the national nod. She is the first Eagle volleyball player since Joy Talcott in 2011, to be named to the Academic All-American team. Talcott was named to the College Division Third Team.

The 6-foot-3-inch powerhouse also earned Golden State Athletic Conference player of the year honors, All-GSAC honors and NAIA All-Tournament team honors for her prowess on the court this year.

She led Biola with 318 kills in 100 sets this season as she led the team to its 27-4 overall record. She ranked No. 4 in the nation in hitting percentage (.409) and 10th in the association in blocks (1.19/set).

Weststeyn is among 12 players in the College Division to earn Academic All-American recognition, and the only player from the GSAC. Taryn Nash of Spring Hill was named the College Division volleyball Academic All-American of the year.

In order to be named an Academic All-American student-athletes must be a starter or prominent reserve and earn a cumulative GPA over 3.30. They must also be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
