Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola women's basketball simply cannot catch a break through the pre-conference portion of their 2013-14 schedule. The Eagles have been within four points of a victory five different times, but still, after a two-point loss to William Jessup Saturday, sit at 0-10.
Â
It has been a combination of issues, mishaps and missed shots that led to Biola missing its opportunity to grab that elusive first win. Tonight the biggest problem was their inability to make the clutch free throws.
Â
Biola shot 64 percent overall from the line, but went up against a team that drained all but three of its 27 attempts from the charity stripe, an 89 percent clip. The Eagles missed five free throws in the waning minutes of regulation, dousing the fire on their comeback attempt and causing the game to go into overtime.
Â
Jessup got off to a quick start in the extra frame, scoring five points in the first minute and a half, both baskets made off of Biola turnovers. The Eagles brought it back within one of
Desiree Robinson and
Kiara Clark layups, then another turnover allowed WJU to extend the lead back to three points.
Â
Adijat Adams got clutch with just over a minute remaining and converted an "and one" opportunity to tie the game. It seemed as if the tides were changing for the Eagles who have suffered several last minute heartbreaks this season.
Â
A traveling call with just 17 seconds to play ushered the good feelings out of the gym as WJU was able to convert off the BU giveaway and take a 71-69 lead with just a few seconds to play.
Â
Khadidja Diakite was able to throw up a last-second prayer from behind the arc, but as has habitually happened this year, the ball bounced away and gave William Jessup its fifth win of the season.
Â
The Eagles fall to 0-10 overall while Jessup improves to 5-7.
Â
Adams was the powerhouse player for BU all afternoon long, draining shot after shot and eventually compiling a total of 31 points in 34 minutes on the floor. She also grabbed 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the year and third straight.
Â
She shot well from the floor and line, going 11-18 and 8-11, respectively.
Kiara Clark also had a standout effort in the losing performance, compiling 16 points and four rebounds, while hitting several key three-pointers late.
Â
The game was called very tight all night long, with 43 turnovers, most of them traveling calls, and 44 total fouls. Turnovers were another dagger to the heart of the Eagles, as the Warriors turned their takeaways into 37 points and BU got just nine off theirs.
Â
The eagles have just one more game before a long Christmas break, they will look intently upon going into the break with a win when they face Whittier Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
