Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- You win some. You lose some. After losing 10 straight to open the season, that phrase finally applies to the women's basketball team, as they took down Whittier on Tuesday night, 74-56.
Â
It had been an unbearable start to the season for the Eagles, who put in some solid efforts and had five near-wins, but just couldn't turn the page on their winless start. Finally, thanks to 24 points and 16 rebounds from
Adijat Adams and some solid defensive play, Biola sits at 1-10.
Â
"I'm really proud of our team, the girls have been working really hard," said Head Coach Bethany Miller. "Every game and every practice they have put in the work and we keep getting better and better. Tonight the girls executed a lot of the things we've been working on."
Â
One of the simple things Biola needed to work on was simply making better shot selection. The Eagles showed some improvement in that area tonight as they had their second best percentage from the floor this season (.435).
Â
Adams and
Elizabeth Munger played a pivotal role in BU's ability to drain baskets, making a combined 14 of 19 shot attempts from inside and mid-range. Munger even stepped back and nailed a three-point shot, not a usual part of her game.
Â
Biola led throughout thanks to a fantastic first half, which is pretty normal for this team which has had very strong first halves and weaker second frames.
Â
One are Biola struggled in both frames was their ability to make the three-point attempts. They spent most of the game under 10 percent from deep. A few late threes pushed their percentage above 18 percent, still abysmal.
Â
"We still have a lot of growth that we need as a team to compete in such a tough conference," said Miller. "We're looking forward to the challenge and we're going to continue to go after every team we play.
Â
Adams led all players with her 24-point performance, her third time hitting the 20-plus mark in the last four games. She also tacked on the 16 rebounds to give her four double-doubles in that span.
Â
Munger's 14 followed Adams, and was two more points than the Poets' leading scorer, Danielle Hays.
Khadidja Diakite,
Kiara Clark,
Kyla Dinkel and
Chelsea Hill also got in on the scoring with at least six points each.
Â
Adams led the charge for Biola, as they outscored the Poets 32-16 in the paint and cashed in on 35 points off Whittier's 27 turnovers in the game.
Â
With the winless monkey off their back, the team can relax a little bit as they have a long break to prepare for their next game, Dec. 31 against Vancouver Island University. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. tip-off inside Chase Gymnasium.Â
