Ready To Play

Biola takes a 74-55 road win from West Coast Baptist, powered by new-look offense.

LANCASTER, Calif. --- Some team need a few games to shake off the dust when starting a new season, to get the legs warmed up and ready to play, but not the 2013-14 Biola Eagles.

Dr. Dave Holmquist's new squad came out refueled and ready for action in their season-opener on Saturday night at West Coast Baptist. The Eagles up-tempo offense scored early and often to down the Eagles 74-55.

Dakari Archer came out shooting in his first contest as an Eagle, commanding center stage with a brilliant shooting performance which led to 19 points off of seven made field goals and a perfect three for three from the line.

Right behind him with 14 points was Pierre Zook, a sharpshooter new addition to the new look Eagles squad. He took every look he could from behind the arc, leading to four made three-point looks in nearly 20 minutes on the court.

WCBC played Biola well throughout the first half, but could not keep up with the well-conditioned Eagles, who have been working hard since open gym days over summer.

After holding just a six point lead at the break, Biola turned up the heat in the second half and shot 52 percent from the floor and 83 percent from the free throw line to increase their lead by 13.

Old standbys Andre Murillo and Mike Kurtz came out strong in the opener, each putting in 15-plus minutes and eight-plus points. Kurtz had a good showing from the line, draining all four of his free throw attempts. Murrillo snagged the team's first double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Biola suffered from a small case of the giveaways, dropping 21 turnovers on the evening, compared to just 12 on the other Eagles' side.

The win moves Biola to 1-0 on the season. They return to action on Tuesday night in Chase Gymnasium as they face CSU San Marcos in their home opener.
