Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was crisp, clean passing and a high octane shooting game that gave No. 12 CSU San Marcos the edge and eventually the win over the Eagles to spoil Biola's home opener.
Â
The Cougars relied on a fast paced, well setup offense that excelled in passing the ball to down BU 74-65 in a gritty battle in Chase Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Biola's loss drops
Dr. Dave Holmquist's squad to 1-1 on the year and boosts CSUSM to 3-0 on the season.
Â
"We just need to correct some things for next time out," said Holmquist. "We have a good team, a young team, we just need to take care of the ball better. We had a few things exposed tonight that we need to improve on."
Â
Turnovers, again, were an area that the Eagles struggled with, giving the ball away 23 times to the Cougars in the home loss. They outshot the Cougars from the field throughout the game, getting good looks by guys like
Mike Kurtz and
Andre Murillo, but CSUSM was able to make up some ground by shooting the ball 10 more times that Biola and sinking six more three-point shots, three of which came from ex-Eagle Zack Zaragosa.
Â
Murillo and Kurtz had strong games for the Eagles, who remained competitive throughout with one of the top squads in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Both big men made it into the double-digits in points and shot above 75 percent from the floor.
Â
"I think the biggest difference in this game was that we just turned the ball over, didn't draw enough fouls and our three-point shooting hurt us," said Holmquist.
Â
BU committed 23 personal fouls on the night and were only able to draw 17 from the opposing side. They also only sunk three of their 15 three-point attempts, despite another stong game from three-point specialist
Pierre Zook, who ended with 15 points in 32 minutes.
Â
The Eagles have a quick turnaround and then head out for two games in Montana this weekend. They face Carroll College on Friday night and Montana Tech on Saturday.
