Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- With at 13 point lead at the halfway point it was Biola's game to lose, and after some late foul trouble and some clutch shooting down the stretch by their opponents, the Eagles did lose, 65-62, to Cal Maritime.
The loss is BU's fourth straight to start the season and it pushes Cal Maritime to 2-1 overall.
"Tonight was a tough loss," said Head Coach
Dr. Bethany Miller. "We came out early in the second half and picked up some fouls, getting a lot of our players in foul trouble. We just showed that we need to be more disciplined."
The Eagles dominated play early on, making a lot of shots and a lot of free throws to buy them some breathing room against the Keelhaulers during the first half. They picked up just seven fouls in the first 20 minutes, compared to CSUM's 11.
Those 11 fouls turned into 16 free throw attempts for BU, and they converted 11 of them to shoot 69 percent from the line.
The Eagles were able to build their lead despite a poor shooting percentage from the field thanks to their prowess on the boards, as they tacked on 15 offensive boards and 16 defensive in the first half.
Biola held firm throughout the half and showed their ability to control the flow of the game and went into halftime leading 31-15.
The second half was a completely different tale for the Eagles as they began to lose focus and foul much more frequently. BU was whistled for 16 personal fouls in the final 20 minutes and had to players foul out of the game in the final two minutes. A final two minutes that became crucial after a quick comeback by CSUM, keyed by five 3-point field goals.
"We need to be more disciplined and put a solid 40 minutes together, rather than 20-25 minutes of solid team defense," said Miller.
This is the second consecutive game that Biola has played very well in the first half, only to see a less stellar second half let things slip away.
They battled all the way until the final five seconds, after they found themselves down by just three points thanks to a clutch 3-point field goal by
Adijat Adams. Adams had one more look right as time expired, but the ball clanked off the backboard and secured the Keelhaulers' 65-62 victory.
Chelsea Hill led all players with 20 points, and Adams picked up her third double-double of the season, grabbing 16 points and a season-high 16 rebounds.
Shante Sands and Tatjana Pitts tied with 13 points to lead CSUM, and
Chelsea Hill led all players with three blocks.
Biola continues to seek the elusive first win of the season, and will try again tomorrow against Menlo College at 3 p.m. in Chase Gymnasium.
