Box Score EL CAJON, Calif. --- With another in-conference sweep, this time 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-18) over the San Diego Christian Hawks, the No. 3 Biola Eagles move to 22-2 (12-1 GSAC) and solidified their place tied atop the Golden State Athletic Conference.
Amy Weststeyn played another fantastic game for the Eagles, picking up a team-leading 11 kills while hitting .562 and notching another three service aces.
It was a dominating display of power by the Eagles, who held the lead throughout the entirety of the first and second sets, but had to fight their way through a tough third set to get the sweep.
"We were very balanced all night and had a solid defensive performance," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "It is a tough place to play, and San Diego was a very solid blocking team."
Any team that can keep up with Biola on the blocking front is definitely a solid blocking team, and SDC did just that tonight, putting up six total team blocks, equaling BU's output, and causing a few issues in set three.
SDCC came out quick in the third set, picking up the first two points of the set with a kill and a rare attack error by Weststeyn, one of just two she had in the whole match.
Biola staged a small comeback to keep the set competitive after picking up two huge kills from
Britta Blaser. The teams then traded points until midway through the set
Lauren Hoenecke got the service and led Biola on a 5-1 run to put them up 11-9 before they would runaway with the rest of the set and grab the win.
Joclyn Kirton and
Lauren Hoenecke had two big games as they each picked up nine kills and Hoenecke hit an impressive .444.
"Lauren played very well," said Seltzer.
Gracee Gallarda, as usual, had a strong game, by picking up 36 assists, more than double that of her counterpart on the Hawks. She was able to pick all those up because BU nearly doubled the Hawks kill output by tacking on 14-plus kills in all three sets. In addition to her setting performance, Gallarda got around on defense for the Eagles, leading the squad with 11 digs on the night.
The win helps Biola keep pace with Concordia for bragging rights in the Golden State Athletic Conference. The two teams meet in the final regular season match of the season this Saturday. Biola hosts the 7 p.m. match, and it is the Eagles' senior night and a Biola Blackout, so fans are encouraged to wear all black.
