Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was business as normal inside J. Richard Chase Gymnasium on Tuesday night as No. 3 Biola grabbed its 15
th straight win and sixth Golden State Athletic Conference victory.
The Eagles came out and got some playing time in for some of their younger players as they swept the San Diego Christian Hawks (25-14, 25-19, 25-12) to move to 15-0 (6-0 GSAC) and drop the Hawks to 4-13 (2-4 GSAC).
"Outside of starting off a little slow in game two they just played well, they maintained a high level," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer.
Biola and SDC traded points early in the first set, resulting in a 5-5 deadlock, but then a 15-4 run by BU, aided by some phenomenal serving from
Crissy Cunningham and
Tara Rallis helped the Eagles secure a big win in set one.
After the break the Hawks came out hunting, edging out to a 7-2 lead before Biola began putting points back up on the board to come back. They got their first four points of the set off consecutive blocks, a sequence that dropped BU's attack percentage by over .100.
"They (SDC) were much improved tonight," said Seltzer. "They are very good defensively, a good blocking team. You could see they got us into a lot of long rallies and dug a lot of balls. They were forcing us to error, and if we did not error eventually we could work our way through it, but they did a really good job."
The Eagles worked their way through the defense to pick up 16 kills in the middle set, including five by
Alyssa Mason and seven by
Joclyn Kirton. Kirton led all players with 14 in the match and Mason was second with 11. Aja Walker led the Hawks with eight.
"Alyssa (Mason) did really, really well," said Seltzer. "She was in a good rhythm and hit a lot of balls down the line and they just did not know how to stop that. She did a good job."
It seemed like every ball Mason hit was a laser directed right onto the floor somewhere as she hit .714 for the match.
Nicolette Douglas set the entire match for Biola, tacking on 40 sets and even picking up two kills.
"Nicolette did really good tonight, I thought she set a really good offense and she picked very good options," said Seltzer.
Tara Rallis played all three sets and came away with another fantastic match, adding 22 digs to up her season mark to 162; tonight was the first match this year that she picked up 20-plus digs.
Lauren Hoenecke is another young player that saw a lot of action tonight and impressed Seltzer picking up two kills and a solo block, the only solo block of the night.
"Lauren could be a starter on any other team," said Seltzer. "She is in a tough spot stuck behind two great middles, so its hard for her to get time, but she is doing a really good job."
Biola's next match will be a battle of two national giants as they square off against CUI in Irvine. Concordia matched BU almost stride for stride as they also improved to 15-0 (6-0 GSAC) with a 3-1 win over No. 16 The Master's tonight.
That match occurs on Saturday Oct. 12 at 7 p.m and can be seen live
here.
