Penalty Kicked

An early penalty kick goal awarded to Concordia sunk Biola 1-0 in their second GSAC match of the year.

Chrissy King (12) was one of the many hardworking Biola players to battle to a tough 1-0 loss on Saturday.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a bitter back-and-forth affair on Al Barbour Field late in the evening on Saturday, and after a penalty kick score in the first half No. 18 Concordia defeats No. 22 Biola 1-0.

"It was an exciting game with lots of ebbs and flows," said Head Coach Todd Elkins. "We started really strong and were playing on the front foot, I really loved the attitude of the team."

Perhaps the intensity was such that emotions broke into the game as Concordia was awarded a penalty kick early on after a mistimed Biola tackle in the box. 20 minutes and 11 seconds into the first half Carly Mottram stepped up to the line to take the PK for CUI. The sophomore lined up her shot just right as she was able to squeeze it by a diving Briana Williams into the back right corner of the net to put Concordia in front.

Outside of allowing the penalty kick score, Williams was the most consistent player on the pitch on Saturday for the Eagles who pushed hard but were unable to create anything offensively.

Williams faced 12 shots on goal from Concordia whose speedy forwards and midfield players were creating opportunities from all over the pitch. She put up 11 huge stops that were key in keeping Biola in the game and holding the 1-0 deficit. The junior also had to face seven corner kick chances from CUI, and did what she could to keep them off the board, punching a few balls out of the box to safety.

"The girls all put forth everything they had tonight and you could tell they were really disappointed with the loss," said Elkins. "I think we had a really good start and a really good end to the game, and I don't know how we were unable to put in a goal at the end. The girls did a great job of continually creating chances and the effort was great to see."

The second half of the game was all Biola in terms of quality chances, because although CUI led in shots 15-8, BU found a way to create numerous opportunities directly in front of the net. Taylor Venegas, Margaret Guadarrama and Jessie Burns pushed especially hard to team up and create good chances in the final eight to 10 minutes of play.

"Concordia had great pacing and they used their speed to manage some good attacks and play strong defense," said Elkins. "We had some good chances against them that should've gone through, but that is the way the game goes sometimes, but to lose on a penalty kick just does not feel right tonight."

The loss is Biola's second straight since the opening of Golden State Athletic Conference play, and they move to 6-4 (0-2 GSAC) on the year, while CUI remains undefeated at 7-0-2 (2-0 GSAC).

BU next hits the pitch on Tuesday at Arizona Christian at 3:00 p.m.
