Serving Up A 'W'

Phenomenal serving and strong blocking leads to a convincing 3-0 win over Arizona Christian.

Nicolette Douglas led the way with 21 assists as the Eagles' offensive onslaught downed the Firestorm.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After a 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-18) sweep over Arizona Christian on Friday night No. 3 Biola now has four Golden State Athletic Conference wins, all while dropping just one set.

The team's dominance comes from all aspects of the Eagles' play, ranging from acrobatic diving digs to finesse passes to piercing kills. Another aspect BU refined in tonight's game was their ability to serve, Biola ended with 11 service aces against ACU, tying their season-high set last week against Hope International.

Amy Weststeyn, Alex Brehaut and Jaci Schork led Biola with two service aces each, Arizona Christian ended the match with just one ace.

"It was a really good night for us," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "We were able to work some players into the rotation that have not seen as much time on the court this year. Getting experience in conference matches is irreplaceable."

Olivia Sorensen, Cassie Mulder and Lauren Hoenecke got a combined seven sets worth of playing time tonight. Entering the game that trio had appeared in just 18 sets in the previous 12 matches.

Another positive aspect that tagged along with the great serving was the Eagles' outstanding sideout percentage. They did not have a sideout percentage lower that 71 percent all match. ACU only won two consecutive points four times in the first and third set combined.

"The team did a fantastic job winning the ball back tonight. They did not hang their head at all when they lost a point, they just went right out and got it back, just like we want them to do," said Seltzer.

Biola led the entire first set, running away with the 25-9 win while picking up 13 kills, compared to the Firestorm's three. ACU improved in each set, ultimately building to a competitive third set in which they picked up 13 kills.

"They are a really young team that is still improving," said Seltzer. "They play in the most difficult conference in the NAIA, and that is a big challenge for a team so young. I am confident they will keep building and be competitive really soon."

Sydney Smith played well for the Firestorm, leading all players with nine kills on the night, despite hitting just .190.

Weststeyn improved on her national runner-up hitting percentage by attacking at an .833 clip, while picking up five kills. Alyssa Mason led the Eagles with seven kills, while three others tacked on more than five.

Nicolette Douglas set the final two sets for Biola and led all players with 21. Gracee Gallarda finished with eight in set one.
It was another block party thrown by BU, who sits 13th in the NAIA in blocks per set. The Eagles managed 12 total blocks on the night, including six solo stuffs.

Biola improves to 13-0 (4-0 GSAC) while the Firstorm fall to 1-12 (0-4 GSAC). The fourth conference win puts BU into a tie for first place in the GSAC with No. 1 Concordia who is also 13-0.

It will be an intense showdown the next time theEagles take the court as they travel all the way to Santa Barbara, Calif. to battle No. 10 Westmont tomorrow night.
