Erred Out

Despite leading in kills, digs and assists the Eagles fell 3-1 to No. 2 Texas-Brownsville.

Tara Rallis (left) and Joclyn Kirton (21) led everyone in digs and kills, but UTB led on the scoreboard in BU's second loss.
Box Score BROWNSVILLE, Texas --- Huge numbers in the kill column could not help the No. 3 Eagles overcome their tendency to err at the net and at the serve as they fell 3-1 to No. 2 Texas-Brownsville on Friday night.

Biola entered the game looking to rebound after suffering their first loss of the season a week ago against No. 1 Concordia. The CUI match was even throughout, and saw BU fall to a top tier opponent.

Tonight, the loss was more about the Eagles shooting themselves in the foot with some costly errors that were not made by the Ocelots.

"I thought we played very well in games one and two," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "We just could not sustain that same level for the whole match. We had way to many missed serves, and an incredible amount of attack errors doomed us."

Biola had 32 attack errors on the night, but their 55 kills gave them a hitting percentage (.140) that was comparable to the Ocelots (.163), who only racked up 43 kills.

It was the service errors that dug a whole that Biola just could not climb out of. The Eagles hit 12 serves into the net, as opposed to just six from UTB's servers. Brownsville also managed to drop seven service aces between the BU players.

Despite the high number of aces, the Eagles managed to have a great night defensively, with Tara Rallis picking up 30 digs and Gracee Gallarda and Crissy Cunningham each had 10-plus.

BU came out strong early, and they seemed to have the mental edge after taking the first set of the night in overtime, but they quickly lost the advantage as they lost the next three straights set (28-26, 21-25, 18-25, 19-25).

Joclyn Kirton once again led all players racking in an incredible 18 kills on the night, while registering just six errors to hit .324, second only to Amy Weststeyn. Weststeyn was third on the squad in kills (10), and sandwiched between her and Kirton was Chelsee Arnitz (13).

Annelies Dokter led the Ocelots with 12 kills.

Biola will have another chance to get back to their winning ways as they take on No. 22 Columbia tomorrow afternoon. The Cougars will be the Eagles' third straight opponent from last season's top four teams at the national tournament.
