Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Fresh off a 6-0 win against Arizona Christian, a revitalized Eagles squad returned to Al Barbour Field to battle with the undefeated, GSAC-leading, No. 3 Westmont Warriors.
Â
True to their name, Westmont warred with the Eagles, putting in a full 110 minutes of tight, physical and quick play eventually ending in a 0-0 draw.
Â
"Westmont is the best team in our conference right now, so I am proud of our girls," said Head Coach
Todd Elkins. "They worked hard and battled physically against Westmont who was super physical as they were wanting to win the ball back from us."
Â
Physical was the name of the game on the pitch for this one, as a total of 27 fouls were called, including three yellow cards. It was a clash of two of the top defenses in the conference and in all of the NAIA as the two squads entered play only allowing a combined 13 goals on the year.
Â
Defense was key on both sides, but needed to be executed without any flaws by Biola because of a relentless offensive attack by Westmont which resulted in 20 total shots and 10 shots on goal.
Â
"When you are defending, sometimes you have to defend three, four, five times before you can get an attacking chance, and then you may go three, four, five times again," said Elkins. "That is a little bit of how the game went, and as long as you're solid in your defending then you keep yourself in the game, and that is what we were able to do."
Â
Morgan Aukshunas led the solid back four of BU to another outstanding night full of key defensive takeaways. The senior defender ended up with two blocks that kept the ball out of the back of the net, assisting her keeper
Briana Williams, who had two saves on the night.
Â
It was a resurgent effort for Biola's defense that had two disappointing losses last week to begin GSAC play.
Â
"We needed a good solid effort on defenst, and we got one," said Elkins. "Yet we were still trying to attack, we were not just trying to defend to a tie. We had to commit good numbers defensively, but at the same time we wanted to counter, and we did."
Â
Michelle Clark,
Miranda Starbeck and
Amanda Lillicrop led the Eagles offensive attack once it did get going and worked hard to get off BU's two shots on goal.
Chrissy King,
Amanda Otto and
Taylor Venegas worked together on numerous occasions late in regulation and in overtime to try and break through the increasingly intense Westmont defense and create something for Biola.
"Westmont is used to winning, so when the game is still tied, they are going to push and push and push until they get enough chances to score," said Elkins. "They created some good ones, but we made some good defensive plays to keep them out."
Â
The draw kept Westmont undefeated, but also kept them from adding to their win total, and moved them to 9-0-2 (3-0-1 GSAC) and improved the Eagles to 7-4-1 (1-2-1 GSAC). Biola next takes the field Wednesday at San Diego Christian.
