Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola's defense was on display once again, holding Cal State San Marcos to just 42 points on 25 percent shooting in a 61-42 victory in a non-conference game on Friday night at Chase Gymnasium.
The Eagles open 2013 with a victory and improve to 8-6 on the season while dropping the Cougars to 9-15 overall.
Biola played a solid defensive game, allowing one-third the points against as it did in its last game, a wild 112-96 loss to Olivet Nazarene. This time, the Eagles held Cal State San Marcos to just 25 percent shooting from the field including a 17.2 percent mark in the first half. In addition, the Cougars were able to hit just one three-pointer in 15 attempts as Biola really clamped down along the perimeter.
Junior Adijat Adams had a double-double in the first half, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds while adding four blocks. Sophomore Elizabeth Munger contributed 10 points with fellow sophomore Amy Freet scoring seven points and adding nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.
After a sluggish start by both teams, Biola held a slim three-point lead at 10-7 just over eight minutes into the contest. Becca Devere hit a three-pointer to ignite the Eagles to an 18-7 run over the rest of the half, giving them a 31-14 lead at the break.
Adams scored eight-straight points for Biola over the half-ending run with freshman Abby Chapman hitting a three-pointer and Chelsea Hill hitting a last-second layup to cap the scoring.
In the second half, Cal State San Marcos came out firing and used an 11-3 run over the first three minutes of the half to cut the lead to nine at 34-25. But Biola responded with a 10-point run over the next three minutes to take a 19-point lead at 44-25 with 13:39 left and never looked back. The Eagles would lead by as many as 25 the rest of the way before settling for the 19-point victory.
Biola completely dominated the glass, out-rebounding Cal State San Marcos 56-29. The Eagles recorded 19 offensive rebounds leading to 17 second-chance points. The Cougars were able to stay relatively close throughout the game thanks to 27 turnovers they forced leading to 18 points.
Sherika Miller and Mechel'la Logan each scored 13 points to pace the Cougars.
Biola plays its final pre-conference tuneup on Saturday, hosting William Jessup University at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles have a tough week ahead as GSAC starts with Biola traveling to face No. 4 Westmont on Tuesday, then hosting No. 3 Vanguard on Saturday, Jan. 12. Both games tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
