Jeremy Pope scored 19 points while
Mike Kurtz recorded his fourth-straight double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds as Biola pulled away late to down San Diego Christian 72-64 in a GSAC game on Tuesday night.
The Eagles pick up their first GSAC win of the season to improve to 1-2 and to 11-8 overall. The Hawks move to 4-8 on the season and to 1-2 in conference play.
Pope, who was playing in just his third game with Biola, scored 19 points thanks in large part to 11 of 12 shooting from the free throw line.
Kurtz continued his hot play of late with 6-of-10 shooting from the field for 17 points. He added four blocks to give him an NAIA-leading 55 on the season.
Dakota Anderson added a season-high 17 points while Cody Wittick scored 11.
Biola didn't miss much in the second half, connecting on 13-of-18 from the field including 3-of-4 from three-point range. The Eagles also hit 13-of-15 free throw attempts. Biola shot 72.2 percent overall in the second half to finish at 48.8 percent for the game.
Biola struggled to get going in the first half, quickly falling behind by six at 14-8 seven minutes into the game. The Eagles found their stride and eventually tied the game at 27-27 on a three-pointer by Pope with five minutes to go before the half. Still tied at 29-29, San Diego Christian took off, scoring 10-straight and took a 39-30 lead to halftime.
Biola trailed by eight early in the second half but used an 11-1 run capped by a three-point play from Anderson to take back the lead at 44-43 at the 14:43 mark. San Diego Christian was able to slowly build back up a five-point lead at 54-49 halfway through the second half.
But Biola came alive and used a 13-3 run to go up by five with 3:35 left. The Eagles clung to a three-point lead with 1:49 to go but were able to make eight-straight free throws over the next minute to stretch the lead to 11 before a last-second three-pointer made it an eight-point final score.
Derek Dickerson scored 24 points on 6-of-9 three-point shooting. The Hawks hit 7-of-10 from the three-point line through the first 20 minutes, but connected on just 2-of-13 attempts in the second half.
Biola returns to the court on Saturday, hosting The Master's College (11-7, 0-3 GSAC) in a GSAC contest at 7:30 p.m. at Chase Gymnasium.
