Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. --- Biola freshman outside hitter
Joclyn Kirton recorded a career-high 18 kills to lead No. 4 Biola to a 25-13, 25-17, 25-23 win over Hope International University in a GSAC match on Saturday night at Darling Pavilion in Fullerton.
The Eagles recorded their 15th-straight win to improve to 16-1 on the season and move to 3-0 in GSAC play. The Royals drop to 2-9 and to 0-3 in the conference.
Kirton had a banner day for Biola, recording 18 kills in 32 swings with just four errors, posting a .438 attack percentage. She added six digs and a block and played the entire match as the primary option on the outside as the Eagles rested many of their normal starters.
Senior middle blocker
Rachel Buckley added eight kills, two aces and a pair of blocks as she moved into a tie for ninth on Biola's all-time career blocks list with 282. She needs just 18 over the rest of the season to become the eighth Eagle with 300 in her career.
The Eagles got off to a quick start in the match, opening the first set with a 10-1 run and not looking back behind the team's normal starting lineup. Biola tweeked the lineup a bit and still dominated in the second set, though the run came late. Leading by two at 16-14, the Eagles turned up the heat, swinging the momentum with a big kill by Kirton, which keyed a 7-1 run. Biola closed out the set with kills from freshmen
Lauren Hoenecke and
Britta Blaser to take the second set 25-17.
The third set was much closer as Hope refused to go away quietly. After the set started out with a see-saw battle, the Royals used a 7-1 run to take a commanding 15-9 lead in the set. The lead was still six moments later at 18-12 when the momentum again changed with back-to-back kills by Buckley and senior setter
Justine Schoneveld. Hope got a sideout to make it 19-14, but Buckely and Schoneveld combined on a block which started a huge final run for the Eagles.
A sideout off a Biola error made it 20-17 when Kirton simply took over the set, recording a monster cross court kill followed by a roll shot to the middle of the court to make it a one-point game. After a Hope attack error, Buckley served an ace to give the Eagles a 21-20 lead. Kirton followed with another kill to make it 22-20 only to see three-straight points by the Royals nearly sink the run. Biola called a timeout and came out needing three quick points. Kirton took care of it with three-straight kills to give the Eagles the match in three.
Kirton finished the match with nine of her 18 kills in the third set including six over the course of Biola's final 13-5 run. Her impressive night comes on the heels of a great night against Vanguard on Tuesday as she recorded seven kills in nine swings with no errors.
Senior setter
Justine Schoneveld also reached a milestone in the match, recording a match-high 28 assists to move into 10th place on the all-time assists list with 1,855 in her career.
Despite a .174 attack percentage in the third set, Biola finished with a .306 mark in the match--the 12th time the Eagles have hit .300 or better on the season. Biola led the GSAC and ranked second in the GSAC with a .314 attack percentage on the season.
The Eagles return to action with its longest road trip of the season on Tuesday, traveling to Phoenix to take on GSAC newcomer Arizona Christian University at 7:00 p.m.
