Box Score SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- Biola came out firing and dominated a match between Top 15 NAIA teams, sweeping No. 13 The Master's College 25-13, 25-23, 25-13 in the GSAC opener for both teams Saturday night at Bross Gym.
The Eagles improve to 14-1 and are now 1-0 in GSAC play having won 13-straight matches, dropping just two sets over that stretch. The Mustangs drop to 13-2 and to 0-1 in conference.
Senior outside hitter Christine Douglas recorded 13 kills and added 10 digs for her first double-double of the season. Sophomore middle blocker Amy Weststeyn added 12 kills and posted a .478 attack percentage while senior Nicolette Mather adding 10 kills.
Overall, Biola hit a respectable .232 in the match, recording six blocks and 45 total kills. The Eagles also held The Master's to just a .051 attack percentage.
The Eagles got off to a dominating start in the match with a strong showing in the first set. Biola turned a slim 10-7 margin into a blowout with an 8-1 run with Douglas and Weststeyn each recording a pair of kills. Biola would score three of the final four points in the set and cruised to a 25-13 win.
The second set proved to be a lot tougher. The Eagles got out to a quick 11-7 lead and led 17-11 at one point midway through the set. The Master's slowly started to work back into the set, closing the gap to one on a block which made it 21-20. With the score tied at 23-23, Joclyn Kirton and Amy Weststeyn recorded back-to-back kills to give the Eagles a big 25-23 win and a 2-0 lead.
Biola was strong in the third set, jumping out to a 9-4 lead and using a 7-1 run to take a commanding 17-7 lead. The Eagles would close out the set again with a 4-1 run to win 25-13 and take the match in three.
Junior setter Gracee Gallarda had her second double-double of the year with 39 assists and 10 digs, adding a solo block and a service ace. Sophomore libero Tara Rallis added a game-high 21 digs.
No Mustangs' player had double-figure kills with Sam Dougherty leading the way with seven kills. The Eagles held the The Master's to a .051 attack percentage including a -.143 mark in the third set.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, hosting Vanguard University in its GSAC Home Opener beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Chase Gymnasium.
