Box Score SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --- Despite the 100-plus degree heat, Biola's women's soccer team put forth a solid effort, beating the heat but falling short in its attempt to beat NCAA Division II Cal State San Bernardino, losing 1-0 to the Coyotes in its season opener on Tuesday.
The Eagles (0-1) played a solid first half, playing even with the Coyotes despite the hot weather through the first 45 minutes. However, early in the second half, Cal State San Bernardino struck first as Miranda Corneliussen took a shot from a tough angle and beat a stunned Biola net minder in the 53rd minute.
The shot appeared to be going just wide, but somehow snuck in to the right corner and gave the Coyotes the only goal of the match.
Just five minutes later, it looked like Biola would knot the match with its lone quality scoring chance of the match. Chrissy King slipped a nice pass through the defense to Victoria Dalla Zanna who was one-on-one with the keeper. However, her attempt to beat the keeps high was saved to keep the Eagles off the board.
"It was typical San Bernardino weather: brutally hot," said Head Coach Todd Elkins. "There were a few times in the second half where it cooled off a bit, but our girls handled it well. We played better in the second half for sure and improved form our scrimmage on Saturday."
Biola was outshot in the match 9-4, though just two shots by Cal State San Bernardino and one by the Eagles were on frame.
"Unfortunately, it's a counting game, but still that's a good team and they are especially good at their place," said Elkins.
Biola returns to action with its home opener on Thursday, hosting Colorado Christian University at 4:30 p.m. at Al Barbour Field.
