Biola's Run Ends in Quarterfinal Loss to No. 2 Union University

FRANKFORT, Ky. --- Biola's impressive run through the field at the 2012 NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship tournament came to an end on Saturday night as No. 2 Union University (Tenn.) ended the Eagles' season in a 74-52 game at the Frankfort Convention Center.

The Eagles wrap up their season with a 23-11 record after winning 11 of their last 14 games after nearly being written off at the end of January. The Bulldogs advance to the semifinals on Monday and are now 34-2.

Biola's Charrise Reece capped off an incredible tournament, scoring 14 points to give her 45 points in three tournament games and 1,030 in her career. She also had three steals to give her exactly 300 and she added two assists to cap her school record at 507. Reece is the only player with 1,000 points, 500 assists and 300 steals in a Biola career.

Amy Freet recorded a season-best 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds off the bench for Biola.

The Eagles just seemed to run out of gas, playing their third game in as many days--all against NAIA Top 10 teams. Biola had defeated a pair of teams with 30-wins over the last two days, but just couldn't seem to keep up with perennial power Union.

Biola hung with the Bulldogs through the first 10 minutes of the game, trailing 15-13 with 9:58 to go in the first half. But Union pulled away with a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to break the game open and take a 28-15 lead with 4:47 to go before halftime. The Bulldogs would score four points over the final 30 seconds of the half to take a 34-21 hafltime lead.

Biola tried to stay close in the second half, but Union hit nearly 50 percent of its shots in the second half and the Eagles just could not keep up.

The Eagles had shot nearly 45% in the first two games of the tournament, but could not match that output against the tough Bulldog defense, hitting 29.5% from the field. Union connected on 53.1% of its total shots and was 6-of-8 from three-point range in the second half.

Biola stuck around with 16 offensive rebounds of its 30 total boards and by forcing 12 Union turnovers while commiting a season-low nine turnovers.

Becca DeVere came off the bench to score 10 points with Adijat Adams adding seven.

Lavanda Ross scored 17 points and added eight assists and nine rebounds in the contest.
