Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. ---
Charrise Reece scored 15 points to give her exactly 1,000 points in her career while
Adijat Adams and
Chelsea Hill each added 15 points as Biola stunned No. 7 Lee University (Tenn.) 69-66 in the first round of the 2012 NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship at the Frankfort Convention Center.
The Eagles improve to 22-10 with their 10th win in the last 12 games and and advance to the second round for just the second time in program history. Biola plays No. 10 Langston University (Okla.) on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. ET. The Lady Lions are 30-3 overall.
Hill sank a pair of key free throws with seven seconds left to seal the big victory. It was just the second victory in the NAIA Tournament for Biola, which is making its fourth-straight trip to the tournament.
"The girls did an excellent job of executing our game plan and playing defense against a very good team," said Biola Head Coach Bethany Miller. "We did a great job of defending their screening offense and we were aggressive on offense ourselves."
The Eagles led through nearly the entire contest which featured two of the top defensive teams in the nation. However, in the end it was Biola's offense which shined at just the right time. The Eagles shot a season-high 51.9% in the game and an impressive 61% in the second half of the game. In the meantime, Biola held Lee to 46.8% shooting, though outside of Hollie German--who scored a game-high 34 points on 11-of-13 percent shooting--the rest of the Lady Flames were just 32% (11-of-34).
Biola led by as many as 11 points down the stretch, holding a 63-52 lead with 2:46 to go in the game. But the Lady Flames rallied to pull within five at 65-60 with 1:58 left. Biola still led by five at 67-62 with 28 seconds left when German hit a quick bucket to make it a three-point game. But after a full court press, the Eagles turned the ball over and Madison Lee hit a layup with eight seconds left to pull within one.
After a quick foul, Hill converted a pair of big free throws to stretch the lead back to three and Biola's defense held the Lady Flames without a good look as time expired.
Reece hit a pair of milestones on the night, despite being hampered with foul trouble and battling sickness the entire day. Her 15 points came on 5-of-8 shooting and gave her 1,000 points in her career. Reece becomes the 17th player in program history to reach the 1,000 point plateau. In addition, she recorded four assists, adding to her school-record total and making her the first women's player to reach 500 assists.
Hill and Adams each added 15 points with Hill having yet another strong game. The freshman was 6-of-10 from the field and added seven assists and five rebounds while Adams--who was plagued with foul trouble--still went 6-for-8 from the field with three rebounds and two blocked shots.
Biola got off to a quick start, jumping out to a 10-1 lead over the first four minutes. However, Adams earned a pair of quick fouls and left the game after just two minutes. The Eagles had a hard time adjusting and Lee took advantage, eventually tying the game at 12-12 with 11:32 to go in the half.
The Lady Flames would take its only lead of the game a few minutes later on a bucket by Karley Miller, which made it 16-15 at the midway point of the half. But Biola answered right back with Hill receiving a great pass from Reece and getting an easy layup to give Biola back the lead.
After going back and forth over the next four minutes, Lee went back on top on a Mary Jackson bucket which made it 22-21 at the 3:55 mark. With the score tied at 23-23 a minute later, Lauren Gustafson drained a long three-pointer to put Biola back on top for good and the Eagles headed to the locker room two minutes later with a 32-29 lead.
Biola opened the second half in a similar fashion to the first, again scoring the 10 of the first 11 points of the half to take a 12-point lead at 42-30 at the 16:35 mark. The Eagles still led by 12 two minutes later when Lee started to rally, using an 11-2 run to cut the lead to three at 50-47.
Biola would weather the storm and went on a short 7-0 run with Reece hitting a pair of tough runners in the lane to stretch the lead back to double-figures at 61-50 with 3:31 to go. That would set up the thrilling finish between the two teams.
The trip has been a tough one for Biola which has had to deal with a number of players getting sick upon arrival in Kentucky. One of those players was senior guard Emily Drews, who battled through her sickness and played 35 minutes, scoring nine points for the Eagles. Reece was also sick during the day and during the game with Jamie Elias putting in a solid six minutes despite also being sick this week.
The win was just the second in eight NAIA Tournament games for the Eagles. Biola's only other victory came in 2009 when the Eagles defeated Trevecca Nazarene 65-57. Thursday's victory was a bit of revenge as Lee defeated the Eagles with a 96-75 win in the second round that year, hitting 13 three-pointers en route to the win.
