Biola Falls in Four to No. 1 Concordia in NAIA Semifinals

Christine Douglas
Box Score SIOUX CITY, Iowa --- Biola's run through the national tournament came to an end at the hand of a familiar face as the No. 4 Biola fell to No. 1 Concordia in a four-set thriller by scores of 25-17, 25-17, 25-27, 28-26 in the semifinals of the 2012 NAIA Volleyball National Championships in Sioux City, Iowa.

Biola ends its season with a record of 31-4, reaching the National Semifinals for the seventh time in program history. Concordia stays perfect at 37-0 on the season.

Senior outside hitter Christine Douglas had a solid final match, leading Biola with 16 kills. Fellow senior Rachel Buckley played on the outside for the first time in her Biola career in place of the injured Joclyn Kirton and recorded nine kills and had three blocks as well.

Sophomore Amy Weststeyn added 14 kills and seven blocks. Junior setter Gracee Gallarda had a match-high 41 assists and added a team-high 21 digs. She also had three kills and one block.

Biola got off to an incredibly slow start in the contest as Concordia used eight blocks in the first 16 points to take an early 17-7 lead. Biola closed the gap a bit with a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to seven at 18-11. But Concordia responded with its own 4-1 run and cruised to a 25-17 win to go up 1-0.

The story was similar in the second set. Biola scored the first three points of the set but Concordia scored nine of the next 10 points to take a commanding 9-4 lead. Biola still trailed by six at 18-12, but made things interesting with a four-point run to make it an 18-16 game. After exchanging points, Concordia put the set away with a 6-0 run to close out the set and win 25-17 again.

The third set started off with the teams going back and forth as Biola regained the form which got it to the semifinal round. But Concordia roared back to life and used a quick 5-1 run to go back on top 12-10. After two Biola points, Concordia scored eight of the next 10 points to take what seemed to be an insurmountable 20-14 lead.

But Chelsee Arntiz picked up her first kill of the match at a key time, slamming down a point to snap the run and start a 4-0 run by Biola which made it 20-18. The teams exchanged points for the next few minutes with Concordia holding match point at 24-22. But Douglas recorded a clutch kill and followed with a service ace to tie the score at 24-24.

Biola would take its first lead in a while after a ball-handling error by Concordia, but couldn't close out the match as Concordia got a kill to tie it at 25-25. But Buckley and Weststeyn teamed up on a block to set up set point number two and Biola closed it out with another block, this time by Arnitz and Nicolette Mather.

The fourth set was close from start to finish and featured a number of four-point runs by each side. Biola led 9-6 in the early going but Concordia rattled off four points to go up 10-9. Biola then scored four-straight followed again by four straight from Concordia and another four-straight for Biola. When the dust settled it was 17-14 Biola.

But Concordia tied the score quickly with a three-point run capped by a triple block of a back-row attack. Weststeyn ended the run with a kill and keyed a 4-1 run which put Biola up 21-18. But again, Concordia scored three-straight and tied the score at 21-21.

The teams would exchange points until a Douglas kill gave Biola set point at 24-23. But Maddy Ekis recorded one of her match-high 18 kills of a Biola block to tie the set and teamed up on a block to give Concordia another match point at 25-24.

Biola fought off the point with a kill by Weststeyn, but an attack by Douglas cross-court missed just wide and once again set up match point for Concordia. Weststeyn was there again to save Biola's season with a big kill to tie it up at 26-26.

After a struggled on serve receive, Biola's free ball over to Concordia was easily slammed down by Briana Hughes to set up match-point number six and this time Concordia put it away, blocking Weststeyn's attack. It was Concordia's 18th block of the match and the ninth for Hughes, who teamed up with Jessica Israel for the block.

Biola was just unable to solve Concordia on the season, dropping all three matches against its conference rival.

The match drops Biola's overall record in National Semifinal matches to 2-5, though the third-set win gave Biola its first set win since 1997 in a semifinal match.

The match was the final contest in the careers of four outstanding Biola seniors: Douglas, Buckley, Mather and Justine Schoneveld. Douglas recorded 16 kills to give her 1,465 for her three-year Biola career. She stands at No. 7 on the all-time list in that category. Mather, who became the 12th Eagle to eclipse the 1,000 kill mark, finishes with 1,024 and is 11th all-time.

Buckley finishes her career with 311 blocks, good enough for seventh all-time, and was fifth in block assists with 273.

Mather closes her stellar career tied for the most matches played with 143 in her career and 11th on the all-time kill list. Schoneveld sits 10th all-time with 1,992 career assists and sixth with a 7.90 assist per set average.
