Blake Continues to Re-Write Record Book in Azusa Pacific Dual

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Freshman Abby Blake continued her assault on the Biola swimming record book, taking down another long-standing mark on Saturday at Lancing Pool during the women's swim team dual meet against Azusa Pacific University.

At the finish of the swimming events, Biola and the Cougars were in a dead heat, with both teams scoring 102 points. However, Azusa Pacific was able to edge ahead of Biola, scoring points from diving to claim a 120-102 victory.

Blake led the way for the Biola women in the individual events, taking first in the 1650 freestyle, breaking a 12-year-old school record with a time of 18:01.57. Blake also claimed victory in the 500 free with a time of 5:19.19.

Sophomore Christine Tixier took first in a pair of events, winning the 400 individual medley in 4:42.90 and touching first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.25. Megan Nerud added a victory in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.02 to help the Eagles' cause.

Going into the final relay, Biola trailed Azusa Pacific 96-88. The relay team of Annabelle Chinchen, Nerud, Tixier, and Angela Kirshner narrowly out-touched the APU team to win the event, and bring Biola to a 102-102 tie at the end of the swimming. Biola's lone female diver was not able to compete in the diving portion of the competition, allowing the Cougars to easily claim first place on both boards and win the meet.

Biola Head Coach Eddie Shepard was pleased with his team's performance.

"I was very excited to see our women keeping pace with a very strong APU squad," said Shepard. "I think that we were right where we want to be for this time in our season, and I think that all our girls had great performances."

Biola's men's and women's teams return to the pool next Saturday, traveling to Redlands for the Bulldog Pentathlon at 9:00 a.m.
