LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola junior defender Scott Hayes has been named to the 2012 Capital One/CoSIDA Men's Soccer College Division Academic All-America Third-Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced on Monday.

Hayes, a junior from Folsom, Calif., recorded a 3.96 GPA in his work toward an international culture studies degree. Hayes, a key part of Biola's back line, helping the Eagles to the GSAC semifinals and a 11-7-1 record. He was among the team leaders in minutes played and picked up an assist during the season as well. Overall, he helped the Eagles hold opponents to just 24 goals on the year.

Hayes is the first Biola men's soccer player to earn Academic All-America honors. Biola had a school-best 12 Academic All-Americans last year and has had 18 in the 60 years Academic All-America awards have been given.

The college division first-team is comprised of the NAIA, Canadian and junior colleges in Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii, Alaska and the 13 provinces and territories in Canada. Hayes was one of three GSAC athletes represented on the two teams. San Diego Christian's Emmanuel Onywera earned second-team honors and Andrew Bussell from The Master's earning third-team recognition.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
