David Cline scored 15 points and added 12 rebounds while
Dakota Anderson scored 15 points including two clutch free throws to give Biola the lead for good as the Eagles beat La Sierra 62-59 on Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.
The Eagles improve to 6-2 on the season with their second-straight win while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-6.
The game was uncomfortably close for Biola for much of the contest. Despite the Eagles opening the game on a 15-4 run, La Sierra used a 12-0 run to get right back into it and stayed within striking distance the rest of the way.
Fast forward to the end of the game. Biola held a three-point lead with 3:30 to play but saw the lead cut to one on a jumper by Bennett Shaw with 3:00 left. While it looked initially to be a game-tying three, it was ruled a two.
Neither team was able to score until Limbo Lound hit a second-chance bucket to take a 59-58 lead with 56 seconds left.
On the ensuing possession, Anderson was fouled and sent to the line with 49 seconds to go, hitting both free throws to put Biola back up, 60-59.
La Sierra called a timeout with 38.5 seconds left and worked the clock down looking for the final shot. Shaw took a long three-pointer with 22 seconds left and a second-chance tip in by Lound missed as well. Zaragoza pulled down the rebound, was fouled and hit both free throws to make it a 62-59 game with 13 seconds to go.
La Sierra took a timeout after crossing mid court with 8.8 seconds left and Hawkins had a tough look at a long three-pointer but missed it. In true form to the game, the Golden Eagles got a second chance and Bennett Shaw took a shot from the right side as time expired, but it rattled off and Biola held on for the three-point win.
The story of the game was second-chance points as La Sierra pulled down 22 offensive rebounds leading to 19 second-chance points.
Neither team shot well with Biola hitting 36.7 percent while La Sierra shot 31.6 percent.
Mike Kurtz scored 12 points and had eight rebounds and three blocks for Biola while Zaragoza also had 12 points and nine boards. Cody Wittick added eight points as all five Biola starters accounted for all 62 of the team's points.
Bennett Shaw led the Golden Eagles with 19 points with Lound adding 10.
BIola returns to action next week, making a road trip to Northern California to face William Jessup University on Friday and Cal Maritime on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
