No. 4 Biola Falls in Five at No. 1 Concordia

Amy Weststeyn
Box Score IRVINE, Calif. --- Senior Christine Douglas had 13 kills and sophomore Amy Weststeyn had nine kills and 10 blocks but it wasn't enough for No. 4 Biola to pull off the upset, falling 25-21, 25-10, 23-25, 22-25, 15-8 to No. 1 Concordia in the GSAC finale for both teams Saturday night.

Biola finishes GSAC play with a record of 12-2 and move to 26-4 on the season. Concordia wraps up its second-straight conference title with a perfect 14-0 record and is now 30-0 overall.

Douglas had 13 kills but hit just .122 in the match while Weststeyn posted nine kills and 10 blocks including six solo to pace Biola. Junior Chelsee Arnitz added nine kills as well and two blocks.

Biola played well in three of the five sets, but really struggled in the other two including the fifth. Despite the struggles, the defense played well through much of the match, recording a season-high 18 blocks in the match. The block total was the most in a match since 2009.

The first set got off to a great start as Biola scored five-straight to take an early 6-3 lead. However, Concordia rallied back and eventually took at 15-14 lead. The teams went back and forth the rest of the way until Concordia broke a 19-19 tie with a 4-1 run to take control, then closed out the set with back-to-back kills by Fei Gao.

The second set was one Biola really struggled in, never getting going offensively and ending up on the losing end of a lopsided score. Concordia jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead and closed out the set on a 10-3 run to win 25-10. Biola would get just four kills while Concordia racked up 17.

Biola rallied back in the third set, opening again with a 6-3 run only to see Concordia tie up the score again at 12-12. But Biola went on a long run, scoring six-straight points and using a 9-1 run to take a 21-13 lead. Concordia slowly closed the gap, though and pulled to within one at 24-23. However, Joclyn Kirton and Rachel Buckley teamed up on a big block to end the set.

Concordia took an early lead in the fourth and led 10-9 when Biola took its first timeout. Out of the timeout, Biola scored three-straight points and started a 6-3 run to go up 15-13. Still leading by one at 19-18, Biola went on another 6-3 run to take a commanding 24-21 lead. After a point by Concordia, Douglas recorded a big kill to end the set and tie up the match.

However, Biola struggled again in the fifth set. After scoring the first three points of the set, Biola allowed Concordia to score four-straight points. A Concordia error tied the match, but Biola committed two straight unforced errors to which really tuned the set. Those errors started a 6-1 Concordia run which made it a 10-5 game. After exchanging points for a stretch Concordia scored three-straight--two on Biola errors--to win the set 15-8 and take the match in five.

Four Concordia players reached double-figures in kills led by Maddy Ekis, who had 16 kills. Fei Gao added 13 kills while Jessica Israel added 12.

Biola closes out the regular season on Tuesday, hosting former GSAC rival Azusa Pacific University (21-8) in a non-conference match at 7:00 p.m.
