Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The big GSAC showdown between No. 4 Biola and No. 2 Concordia turned out to be a one to forget for Biola as Concordia picked up a 25-16, 25-22, 25-21 win in the NAIA Top 10 Matchup on Saturday night at Chase Gymnasium.
Biola's 18-match winning streak comes to an end as the Eagles end the day with a 19-2 record and fall to 6-1 in GSAC play. Concordia improves to 20-0, 7-0 in the conference.
Biola had a tough time getting going in the match, falling behind early in the first set. Already up 7-6, Concordia used a six-point run to take a 13-6 lead in the set. Down 17-8 later in the set, Biola rattled off four-straight points--three on kills from senior
Christine Douglas. However, Concordia ended the run quickly with a kill by Reanna Schelhaas and cruised to a 25-16 win in the first set.
The second set started well for Biola. Down 10-9, Biola used a 7-1 run to take a 16-11 lead and got the crowd of over 1,100 fans back into the contest. Concordia answered the run with a five-point run of its own to pull back to within one. Biola continued to lead as the teams see-sawed down the stretch until Concordia tied the score at 19-19. A few points later,
Christine Douglas came up with a big solo block to give Biola back the lead at 21-20 and a bit of momentum. Concordia answered back with a kill to again tie the score, starting a 5-1 run to close out the set with three of those points coming off Biola errors.
The third set again started out back and forth with Biola using a short run to break an 11-11 tie and take a 17-13 lead. But an 8-1 run by Concordia got the visitors right back into the game and a 21-18 lead. Biola could get no closer than three down the stretch and fell 25-21 in the final set.
Biola was led by Douglas' 15 kills with
Chelsee Arnitz adding nine kills. However, as a team Biola--which ranked third in the NAIA in attack percentage coming into the contest--hit just .147. However, Biola did manage 10 blocks with sophomore
Amy Weststeyn recording a season-best eight blocks including three solo.
Schelhaas just killed Biola, recording a team-high 14 kills on 16 attacks with just one error for an impressive .812 attack percentage. Brooke Marino and Maddy Ekis each added 11 for Concordia.
The Concordia win was the third straight in the series with Biola after Biola had won the previous four in a row. This was the first match to go just three sets since 2008, which was also a Concordia win.
Biola takes a long break from action, returning to the court after an 11-day respite. The Eagles travel to former GSAC foe Point Loma Nazarene University for a non-conference match on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7:00 p.m. Biola returns to GSAC play two days later, hosting The Master's College on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 1:00 p.m.
