Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. ---
Miranda Starbeck tapped home a long cross into the box seven minutes into overtime to give Biola a 2-1 upset win over No. 23 Concordia in a GSAC match on Saturday afternoon on Al Barbour Field.
The victory is the second-straight overtime win for Biola, which improves to 8-6-1 on the season and remains in a third-place tie in the GSAC with a 5-3-0 conference mark. Concordia falls to 8-7-0 and to 3-5-0 in the GSAC.
Starbeck's goal came near the end of a well-played overtime session by Biola which generated a number of scoring chances. Biola earned a corner kick with 2:30 left in the overtime session and senior Taylor Lundquist elected to take the short corner, passing quickly to junior Morgan Gage. After surveying the field quickly, Gage lofted a cross into the box where Starbeck jumped and touched it into the goal. There was a moment of controversy as the linesman's flag had gone up, but after a quick discussion with the center official, the goal was allowed and the match ended.
The goal was the second of the season for Starbeck, both of which have been match-winners.
After a scoreless first half which was mostly dominated by Concordia, the visitors got on the board first in the second half. Val Barrios put Concordia on top with a goal from outside of the area to the upper left corner 7:20 into the second half.
Biola kept up the pressure and was finally able to get the equalizer in the 76th minute. Jessica Austin dribbled the ball through the middle of the field in front of the box and slotted a quick pass to Amanda Otto who broke in behind the defense. Otto then chipped a quick shot over the on-rushing goalkeeper for the tying goal.
Biola managed a pair of shots over the final 15 minutes of the match. The best was a shot by Lundquist after a corner was cleared to the middle. However, the shot was saved by the Concordia goalkeeper to keep the score tied.
Both goalkeepers were up to the challenge. Biola net minder Briana Williams made four saves en route to the win, improving to 6-4-1 on the season and lowering her goals against average to 0.90. Concordia goalie Megan Ferry made three saves in the contest.
Biola's victory was the second of the season against Concordia. Back on September 29, Biola knocked off Concordia by the same 2-1 score in Irvine. BIola fell behind by a goal in that match as well, but fought back with a pair of second-half goals to pull out the win.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to face GSAC newcomer Arizona Christian University in a conference match at 6:00 p.m. The Eagles then return home for their final home match of the regular season, hosting The Master's College on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
